THE FRIENDS OF
St. THOMAS OF CANTERBURY CHURCH
LAPFORD
Easter Saturday saw the rain clouds descend, but that did
not deter the hunt for Easter Eggs - this time around the
Parish Church. It was good to welcome so many families.
All clues were discovered, eggs and goody bags collected
before hot cross buns, drink and craft activities were
enjoyed at the ARK. This was our third such enterprise,
jointly with the Yeo Valley Christian Fellowship and the
Congregational Church. Thank you to all who came, all
who helped, and we look forward to seeing you at another
such event next Easter.

Lapford Spring Fair,

Organised by Sheila Stoneman and her band of helpers
raised 299 for Parish Church funds.
Jenny Gray and Ron Hepworth ran the draw,.
Teas were served by Sheila Stoneman, Mary Brown, Stella
Drew and Ruth Hodge.
The Cake stall was run by Rene Hepworth and Joan
Graham.
Edna Copus ran the Friends stall.
Sylvia Dallas, and Anita Taylor looked after the plants.
Revd John Copus took the Easter Sunday Eucharist at the
Parish Church which was beautifully decorated and
fragrant with the smell of lilies, which had all been arranged
by Church Warden Sheila Stoneman and her band of
helpers.
The Churches Together in Lapford, led by Edna Copus of
the Friends of St. Thomas of Canterbury, and helpers,
organised a very successful Easter Egg hunt, which was
held in the Parish Church, due to the very wet weather. This
was attended by 18, families including around 3 dozen
children, who all found their Easter Eggs, and also went
home with a Goodie Bag.
Afterwards everyone was welcomed into the ARK for Hot
Cross Buns and craft work for the children.

News from Lapford Dog Club

Kennel Club Good

Citizens
Since Lapford Dog Club obtained
listed Status from the Kennel Club last
Autumn, it has been offering their
puppy assessment to all dogs and handlers on the puppy
course. Just before Easter the Club was proud to hold its first
Bronze level assessment. Peter Crotty, a founder member of
the club and KC assessor kindly came over to Lapford to put
seventeen dogs and handlers through the tests. Included in the
assessment were control at door, recall, walking in a controlled
manner amongst people and dogs and a one minute stay. At the
end of a stressful evening Peter was proud to announce that all
dogs had passed with flying colours.

Villagers might be interested to know that the Kennel Club

Agility
Several members of the Dog club are now regularly competing
at KC shows. At a recent show organised by Dartmoor DTC,
in Okehampton, Trisha Mumford with her Flatcoat Cirrus won
the Grade 1 Agility beating Chris Knox and Daisy by less then
half a second. Trisha and Cirrus have therefore progressed to
grade 2. Both Chris and Trisha are regular obedience trainers
for the Club.

This half term we are looking at 'growing & science'

- growing beans, seed sorting, life cycles, kite flying,
floating & sinking are just some of our activities.
Please look out for information regarding a new

May The asparagus season!

Tender raw asparagus tips are good in a rice salad

made from:
cold, boiled long grain brown rice, chopped hard
boiled, local, free-range eggs, mayonnaise, lemon
juice, seasoned with freshly ground pepper. Garnish
with chopped chives.
Fresh asparagus is delicious when steamed until
just tender, brushed with melted butter, sprinkled
with freshly grated Parmesan cheese and browned
under the grill.
Make the most of home grown or local asparagus
by saving the water in which it is cooked as a stock
for soup or risotto.

Paul Cleave

I am writing this on April 11th so it can be published in the May Lapford

Lookout.
Lapford Football Team continues its excellent form, unbeaten since last months
details and still piling up the goals. They have won all six matches since then,
home and away, scoring 44 goals to 3 against. They beat Tedburn St. Mary 4-0,
Newton Poppleford 7-2, Topsham 8-0, Thorverton 5-1 at home, Exmouth
Amateurs 10-0, and Thorverton away by 10-0, an average of over 6 a match.
So, for the third year running, they are very likely to be promoted again. At the moment Chagford are
top, but Lapford have games in hand. One or two other players should be mentioned as well as the three
Tucker boys and Harry Leach. Matt Parcell, Lapfords goal keeper has kept the opponents out so often
with his fine saves, and Guy Hoskins - not only with his sound defensive play, but also his enormous
throw-ins from the touch line. Theres not a player in the English Premier League who can throw further.
He can reach the far side of the goal area, as far as a normal corner kick. Thats of huge benefit in attack
and just as useful in defence as he clears downfield.
But no Club can succeed with good management, and Lapford are well blessed in that respect with Niall
McAreavey as Manager, John (Bimbo) Burrows as long-time Secretary, and Nick Tucker as Assistant
Manager for as many years. With the cup final now just over a fortnight way, lets hope all continues to
go well. COME ON LAPFORD!
The 2nd team under the management of Gavin Burrows and Adam Phillips are going well too, with the
possibility of promotion themselves, and also with some of their players coming through the ranks as
named subs.

May in the Garden and Allotment

The Vegetable and Fruit Garden
The days are getting longer, the soil warmer and with a bit of luck the likelihood of a late frost will
have receded by the end of the month. Whilst you dont need to grow your potatoes in ridges it is a good idea, as you
hoe those little weeds, to pull a little soil over the row of potato plants. You cant draw a hoe really close to the plants
for fear of damaging underground shoots which will in turn grow potatoes. Little tiny weeds that you dont hoe up will
die if they are buried away from sunlight. Also some of the potato tubers will grow very close to the surface and will
push through the top of the soil. If you pull a bit of extra soil over this area around the plants the tubers wont go green
in the sunshine which renders them inedible.
You can direct sow French and runner beans, carrots, sweet corn, squash and pumpkins during this month. Also
sow peas in succession so that you get a continuous harvest through the Summer. Courgettes can be direct sown this
month or plants raised in pots from seed planted in April, can be planted out. Courgettes will produce a lot of useful
food over a very long season as long as they are regularly cut and not allowed to grow into marrows. Two plants will
produce more than enough for a two person household. It is a good idea to initially plant three plants about 18 apart
then after cutting courgettes for about 4 weeks remove the centre plant giving the two remaining plants room to grow.
Continue successional sowing of salad leaves and lettuce. Outside tomato plants can be planted out at the end of
the month.
Strawberries are insect pollinated so make sure that pollinators have access to your plants, either in the greenhouse or
outside under cover. Cover fruit plants and bushes with netting to protect the fruit from the birds. Watch out for
powdery mildew, particularly on gooseberries and treat as necessary with a fungicide. Gooseberries should be thinned
on the branch if you want larger fruit.
The following is what you could be picking and eating this time next year, or if you are an old hand, already are.
Brassica: kale, cauliflower, late purple sprouting broccoli, spring cabbage. Roots: radishes and first carrots. Salad
crops: Salad leaves, pea tips and first Cos lettuce. Legumes: first broad beans at the end of the month. Other veg: baby
globe artichokes. Herbs: parsley, chervil, coriander, first sorrel and of course rosemary, sage, bay, mint, tarragon and
oregano. Fruit: cloched strawberries, rhubarb. Mmmmm! Delicious!
The Ornamental Garden
Both the vegetable, or kitchen garden, and the flower garden benefit from a hoe being drawn through the soil between
the plants. It aerates the soil and when it is dry it is the best time to kill those weed seedlings before they get big. In dry
weather, a seedling, of an inch in height, will die within six hours of being hoed up. When they get to three inches high
they will take up to a week.
Dont be tempted to buy Summer bedding plants and plant them out too early in the month. The garden centres
and nurseries would love to sell them to you and then sell them to you for a second time when they get killed off by a
late frost!
Once spring bulbs are over, rather than cutting down the foliage, leave to die and break down naturally. Dont
forget to deadhead faded flowers to prevent plants wasting energy on making seed heads but you can water in some
liquid fertilizer around the clumps to encourage stronger growth next season. Lift and divide bluebells, being
transplanted in the green will allow their roots to settle in more quickly. Deadhead late varieties of tulips and dress with
blood, fish and bone. This will help you get a better show next year.
Direct sow zinnias. Sow biennials such as foxgloves, honesty and wallflowers. Harvest seed from cowslips and
primroses, sow it straight into a seed tray and keep it somewhere cool and well watered. They might not germinate until
the Autumn so dont forget to water.
Cut plenty of alliums for a vase, they are at their best this month. Add a tiny drop of bleach or vinegar to the
flower water. This stops bacterial build up and reduces that oniony smell.
It is a good idea to do the Chelsea chop to late flowering perennials. Take your secateurs and prune about one
third of the stems by one third and another third of the stems by two thirds. Sounds drastic but it delays flowering of
those pruned stems and increases the overall flowering season.
Spring flowering shrubs should be pruned back to encourage next years growth and trim early flowering clematis if it
has filled its allotted space, and tie in late flowering varieties.
Continue to divide congested perennials and cut back all of the old shoots on your penstemons just above the new
growth. Cut back aubretia and alyssum after flowering to encourage new growth and possibly more flowers.
Plant out dahlia tubers and chrysanthemums for late Summer flowers. I could go on forever, its a good thing the
nights stay lighter for longer because there is a lot to do, but also to enjoy.
Happy Gardening!
