Evart honors first police

officer killed on duty
By Laureen Horan
Weekly Voice

EVART Community
leaders and residents joined
together Friday morning to
honor the life of Evarts first
police officer, George Ted
Edward Seman. Monday
marked the 50th anniversary
since he was killed on duty.
Officer Patrick McClure led
the program and introduced
guest speakers, Senator Darwin Booher and Representative Joel Johnson. McClure
described the history of Semans leadership efforts in
Evart and reflected upon the
night of his untimely death.
Officer Seman, who was
known by the community for

his generosity and humility,

was killed while responding
to a domestic dispute call on
June 13, 1966. Seman was only
36 years old, leaving behind
a wife and three young children.
The speakers comments
were followed by a 21 gun
salute, performed by the Evart Honor Guard, including
Officer Cheyanne Kalman of
the Evart Police department.
Taps played as the participants of the ceremony saluted
the American flag, which was
lowered to half-mass.
The impact of Semans legacy remains evident in the city
of Evart, which is home to
the George Seman Memorial
Highway as of 2009.

HERSEY Since 2009, Robin

Marvel has led a springtime
food drive that fills local food
pantries so families are not
hungry during the summer
months. Marvel has five children of her own and wanted to
create an event that not only
gave back to the community, but
let people have some fun in the
process.
The theme for this years
food drive was Zootopia, and
was complete with live animal
exhibits by John Ball Zoo and
author K.B. Carr.
Snakes, owls, rabbits, tarantulas, rats and tortoises were just
some of the non-human guests
that made an appearance.
Games, bounce houses, a slide
and a car show were among the
various activities to take part
in.
Not only was the food drive
fun for those who attended, but
it saw great success. Over 200
community members stopped
by the event throughout the day
and over $1500 worth of donations were collected. Marvel
estimates that anywhere from
75-100 families will benefit from
the event.
Marvel, who is a motivational
speaker all over the country,
has a goal of filling a semi-truck
with donations at future food
drives. Marvel intends to start
a community center in Hersey
that will have a food pantry,
clothes and household items.
The center would also offer resources such as self-esteem and
resume building workshops.
I think that anyone can
hand out things to people, but
if you teach them to respect

themselves and raise their selfworth, then their entire life will

change, said Marvel. In fact,

What WAS it?

Did you guess that our mystery photo

featured a dredging rotary bit/cutter
head? Once a waterway exists, there is
little guarantee that it will remain navigable.
When the accumulation of industrial
sludge, sand or mud begins to clog shipping lanes giant roto-rooters (auger
dredges) are needed to reopen the channel
or port.
The dredge designs vary by manufacturer and by specific need. Sometimes
these tips are armed with cutting edges.

Either way, they work as caps to the

rotating dredging mechanism; in the simplest of terms, the swirling motion they
create helps guide the sediment into the
intakes suction function.
And talk about timing; check your calendar and prepare to throw that annual
Dredging Anniversary Party. Turns out
that dredging isnt exactly a new concept.
The first U.S. dredging patent was issued
on June 21, 1887, making next week the
129th anniversary of the technology.

Annual Evart Woodcarvers Roundup carves a hobby niche

By Laureen Horan
Weekly Voice

EVART Last weekend

marked the 18th year of
Evarts annual Woodcarvers Roundup.
The roundup, which is
followed by a week-long
woodcarvers seminar,

allows for woodcarvers

of all experience levels
to meet others who share
the hobby and learn more
about it.
Visitors from all over
Michigan and as far
as California, Florida
and New York come to
Evarts fairgrounds to con-

nect with other woodcarvers, make new crafts, and

learn to strengthen their
technique.
Sandy Holder of the
Chief Osceola Woodcarvers has been a part of this
event since the start and
has been woodcarving
since 1996.

This is an event for people of any experience level,

beginners to experts, said
Holder. Its great for the
community economically,
and its just a relaxing hobby. Its very fulfilling when
you finish a project.
Molly Hanna of Norton
Shores has been teaching

woodcarving workshops
at this event for the past 11
years. The award-winning
woodcarver has pursuing
her passion for over 15
years.
Everything I make is
different, said Hanna.
Students watch the wood
come to life when they

carve, and I love to help

them.
The roundup is followed
this week by a five-day
seminar for people who are
more seriously looking to
build their woodcarving
skills. The seminar is led
by Floyd Rhadigan, who also organizes the roundup.

The rascally ways of Valorus Bruce

By Shanna Avery
Special to the Weekly Voice

The pioneers of this area

were marked with a hardy
and persevering nature.
Yet, in the days before
people got their kicks and
grins from t.v., people were
entertainment for each
other, whether they meant
to be or not.
Valorus W. Bruce, proprietor and editor of the
Big Rapids Current, was
a character and a half. He
used his newspaper as a
platform to bring down
some entertainment. His
instigating words were
matched by other editors
of area newspapers who
called out his shenanigans.
Valorus Bruce, a Civil
War vet who got around on
one leg due to a war injury,
was born March 26, 1843,
in Leslie, Ingham County,
Michigan to Wiliam Bruce,
a native of Massachusetts,
and Diantha Rice, a native
of Vermont.
In early life Valorus
worked in his fathers
blacksmith shop until the
age of 19, when he went
into agriculture.

At the outbreak of the

Rebellion he enrolled himself as a private in Co. A,
17th Mich. Inf. He served
18 months and was in action at Fredericksburg and
Vicksburg. At the battle of
Campbells Station, Tenn.,
Nov. 16, 1863, he received
a severe wound during
Longstreets advance on
Knoxville.
This wound resulted in
the loss of his right leg.
He and 19 others were captured and placed in a field
hospital. He was nursed by
Mrs. Nancy S. Galbraith, a
widow of a Union soldier.
After the war Valorus
expressed his gratitude
by securing to her a remuneration for her services
from the government. He
was discharged at Detroit
on March 4, 1864.
During his illness and
recovery from the infliction he encountered from
the war, he became fixed
on bettering his circumstances through education.
He enrolled at college at
Adrian, Michigan, and
studied until 1867 when he
became clerk in the office

until May, 1870.
At this date he came to
Big Rapids and became a
book and stationary dealer.
In the autumn of 1876 he
sold his business. In 1871
he acted as Clerk of the
Michigan House of Representatives at Lansing,
and was also placed on the
Union ticket of Big Rapids for City Recorder. He
served one year.
In 1877, Bruce began his
newspaper career by purchasing the Howard City
Record, which he managed
until 1870, and then, on Feb.
6, 1879, in association with
W. F. Slawson, he founded
the Big Rapids Current,
and soon sold the Record.
He then became sole proprietor of the Current.
In the 1884 Portrait and

was described as being Republican press and called
the official newspaper of
the county with the largest

with her parents, Jesse and
Caroline, in 1855. She was
one of the early teachers of
Mecosta County.
The couple had one child,
Carrie Bruce, born June
13, 1876, in Big Rapids.
Bruce was a zealous
member of the Big Rapids Methodist Episcopal
Church, where he was Sunday School Superintendent
since 1871.
Valorus Bruce was a
passionate man who was
fiercely loyal, to the point
of lashing out at the enemy
that threatened his territory, and, that was sometimes

other local towns in competition with Big Rapids.

In 1879, an exchange
between the Big Rapids
Current and the Reed City
Clarion ensued on who
should get a new railroad.
Bruce had this to say, The
Reed City Clarion of last
week, in order to get even
with the Current for calling Reed City a cross-roads
burg, etc., makes faces at us
in three different articles,
and throws numerous ugly
things at us just as if that
was going to squelch us,
or make Reed City of any
more account. Mr. Clarion,
you may look cross-eyed at
us all you want to, and you
may call us a little infant a
dozen times a week for the
next 18 years, if it will relieve you; but Reed City is
nothing more than a little,
dirty, muddy, drunken
and immoral town at the
best, and will never have
another railroad as long as
it lives. So there. April 3,
1879
The next week he continued, The crossroads paper
in Osceola county scowls
considerably at CURRENTS. We wonder if the
editors mother knows hes
out yet. April 8, 1880
Being a bit of the outspoken nature, Bruce wasnt
much kinder to Chase
when the first issue of the
Chase Eclipse was published, The first number
is well filled with advertisements, local news and a
brief history of the village
of Chase and its business
houses, but the typographical appearance of the urchin is simply horrid. If it
continue to exist, it out to
be greatly improved right
away. Jan. 9, 1884
One of the liveliest
accounts of Bruce was

Standard, Sept. 26, 1885,
Big Church Row. One
legged Editorial Brother at
Big Rapids knocked Into.
From the Free Press, of
Tues. morning, we learn
the particulars about a
most disgraceful row in the
M. E. Church at Big Rapids.
Up to a year ago, V. W.
Bruce, editor of the Big
Rapids Current, was an
active member of the M.
E. Church. There were
many bickerings and quarrels continually going on,
which were aggravated
from time to time by stinging personalities in the
Current. A change of pastor brought no relief; on the
contrary Bruce made his
fight more lively and vigorous than ever.
Bruce was dethroned
from the Superintendency
of the Sunday School, and
later subjected to a church
trial, which resulted in his
excommunication. A few
weeks since the trustees
proceeded to remodel their
church, and last Sunday
was the day appointed for a
sort of formal dedication.
In the issue of the Current last week appeared
several articles attacking
the presiding elder, pastor,
choir leader and others,
and on Friday was sent
through the mails by Bruce
a circular heaping ridicule
and insult upon the trustees, pastor, choir, presiding elder and others, and
predicting a calamity to
the church Sunday morning the dedicatory services
were held in the presence
of a large congregation.
Bruce was there. He was
just passing the entrance
when Will Van Loo, aged
about 19, oldest son of Mr.
and Mrs. Van Loo, the latter for years choir leader,
and with her husband
most active workers in the
church, struck him in the
face, and pitched him over
the rail of banister of the
porch and falling on top of
him gave it to him about
the head in quick order, his
brother assisting when opportunity presented.
A part of the congregation had gone home, some
of those who stood by im-

mediately took sides, and a

free-for-all seemed possible.
The assailants were finally
taken off and went their
way, satisfied that they had
resented the many insults
offered by Bruce to their
honored parents. Bruce
was accompanied home
by some of his friends,
and at the evening service
surprised the congregation
by limping through the
church and taking a seat
well to the front, with his
head bandaged.
There were some kinder
and more heart-warming
press pertaining to Bruce.
The July 3, 1879 Current
told, At the opening of the
M.E. Sabbath school last
Sabbath, 23 little boys and
girls stepped up, one by
one, and hung letters on
a screen prepared for the
purpose, and thus spelled
out the sentence, Dear
friends, we welcome you,
which exercise the school
seemed fully to understand; and the superintendent explained that it was
the feeling of the whole
school at the return of Mr.
V. W. Bruce, a former Superintendent of the school
for six years, and Mrs. V.
W. Bruce, a former teacher,
both of whom were present and greatly enjoyed the
surprise.
A good word was spoken, Feb 22, 1882, The Big
Rapids Current has just
entered upon its fourth
year as happy and prosperous as a lucky man with a
gold mine. The Current is
published by V. W. Bruce,
an old soldier, and is highly
deserving the large patronage which we are pleased to
note is at present receiving
from the Mecosta County
people. The current has
flown rapidly during its
existence and now spreads
over considerable territory.
Raise the flood gates and
let er go, Br. Bruce! Alcone Co Review.
Bruce also sent free issues of his paper to a hospital in his hometown for the
elderly residents to read.
Valorus W. Bruce died on
October 11, 1909 in Toledo,
Ohio. He was buried on
October 13, 1909 in Adrian,
Michigan.
