How to create Piping Material Class?

1. Material selection
2. Wall thickness calculation (e.g. using ASME B31.1, B31.3, etc)
3. Define pressure rating based on design Temperature and Pressure (ASME
B16.5/B16.47)
4. Create detail description for each class (pipe, Flange, flanges, gasket, stud bolts
and valves)

Basic technical factors to be considered during piping material design

and selection:
Basic technical factors to be considered:
1. Fluid type corrosivity, toxicity, viscosity (Content of H2S, CO2, H2O, erosive
aggregates)
2. Temperature range
3. Pressure range

Pipe
a. Type of Joint
a. Seamless (SMLS)

No Weld Defect
Uniform Properties
Seamless pipe is most suited to large wall thickness to diameter ratios
Size Limitations depend on market, usually Carbon Steel Maximum is 18 and stainless Steel is
8, that is could be substituted to welded pipe which have 100% Radiographed Test.

b. Welded (ERW,EFW)
Longitudinally Welded

Spirally Welded

Made from Plate or Strip

Made from coiled strip

Uniform Wall Thickness

Non-preferred for HC duty

Concentricity

QA/QC Requirement

Lower Cost than Seamless

302.3.4 Weld Joint Quality Factor, (ASME B31.3_2012)

a. Basic Quality Factors. The weld joint quality factors, , tabulated in Table A-1B are basic
factors for straight or spiral (helical seam) welded joints for pressure-containing
components as shown in Table 302.3.4.
b. Increased Quality Factors. Table 302.3.4 also indicates higher joint quality factors which
may be substituted for those in Table A-1B for certain kinds of welds if additional
examination is performed beyond that required by the product specification.
