Communitys answers
to help with questions
for Tabernacle school
district candidates
for superintendent
By LINDSEY NOLEN
The Sun
As the Tabernacle Township
School District continues its
search for a new superintendent,
a presentation given at the June
13 Board of Education meeting
shed light on important topics the
community should factor into the
selection process.
All of the work thats been
done has been turned over to the
administrative counsel, Interim
Superintendent John M. Sherry
said. The survey results are
going to be used by the Board of
Education to help guide us in developing the questions that they
will use in looking for the
strengths of the person that they
bring on to be your next chief
school administrator.

Achieving academic success is
no simple task. However, for
Seneca High School valedictorian
Michael A. Miller, it seems to
come easily. Describing his work
ethic as pretty casual, he admits that once he knows what
must be done, he then works it
into his schedule around other assignments, sports and fun activities.
During his high school career,
Miller enjoyed his time spent in
calculus class and, as a lover of
cooking, in his foods classes. He
admits the four years of high
school go by very fast, and recommends all incoming freshmen be

to them so they will grow and experience these years to the fullest.
Despite his high school career
coming to a close, Miller has big
plans ahead of him. He intends to
obtain his bachelors degree in
computer science from the College of Engineering with a minor
in business at Villanova University, where he will be studying this
coming fall. Someday he hopes to
use this education to work in
cyber security, ultimately helping
to make the world a safer place
while simplifying life.
Many of my friends knew of
my interest in business as early
as the sixth grade when I operated a little business during my
lunch period, Warheads Incorporated. I bought Warhead candy at

Seneca salutatorian Erin Welling

inspired by parents success, happiness
By LINDSEY NOLEN
The Sun
The salutatorian of Seneca
High Schools Class of 2016 is

Erin Welling. A lover of Senecas

calculus 1 and 2 and wind ensemble classes, she plans to pursue a
secondary education degree in
electrical engineering with a
minor in mathematics.
Next fall, Welling will be pursuing this degree at the University
of Pittsburgh. She chose this university not only because she fell
in love with the city of Pittsburgh, but also because here she
will be able to study in her desired major while also continuing
her love of music by participating in the schools band.
Helping guide her educational
success, Welling credits her freshman year biology teacher and
long-time family friend, Bonnie
Horner, with inspiring her academic career. She notes Horner
has always seen her potential and
helped to push her in all of her
endeavors, academic or otherwise. In addition to Horner,
Welling admits others have also
largely influenced her recognition as salutatorian.
My role models are my parents. They have both worked hard
to achieve success in their own
careers, Welling said. Growing

up
seeing
their success
and happiness
has inspired
me to want to
be better and
establish myself in my
own
career,
and also to
create a wonWELLING
derful, loving
family in the future.
While Welling certainly made
time to hit the books during her
four years at Seneca, she did not
forget to have fun along the way.
Recalling her favorite high school
memory, she thought back to her
days proudly marching out into
MetLife Stadium alongside the
band during Friday Night Lights
and during practices memories
she knows she will cherish forever.
The best advice I could give an
incoming freshman would be to
take as many opportunities as
you can and live with no regrets,
because soon enough, high school
will be over and you will be movplease see HAPPINESS, page 12

summer is here!
Life changes here in New Jersey for
two-and-a-half months once school
lets out for summer recess. The kiddies are home, which makes us change
our normal routine. Traffic eases up at
the typical before-school and afterschool rushes, and families head out of
town for vacation.
We here at The Sun dont take vacations. Well, thats not true, but our dedication to providing the best coverage
of town doesnt waiver one bit. If anything, summer allows us to focus even
more on the special people, places and
things that make our town so wonderful.
Every summer, the end of the school

school coverage stories and photos
of students and teachers doing a community service project, of high school
sports teams and of noteworthy accomplishments. But that doesnt mean
our pages will be blank.
True, summer often does signal a
slowdown in official town- and
school district-related business, but
there is plenty of newsworthy happenings around town to keep your interest
piqued.
Summer is a time when we often

reach out to you, our readers, for a little help.

Have an interesting story idea
about an annual summer activity you,
your family and/or your local group
partake in? Wed love to cover it.
Know someone or something that
deserves to be spotlighted in a special
way? Wed love to write about it.
Take photos of you and your family enjoying the warm summer weather, either in town or on your family vacation? Wed love to print them for
your neighbors to see.
Summer holds a special place in
everyones heart, even if youre not a
lover of sometimes-oppressive heat.
Help us make this summer special by
keeping in touch, providing us feedback and helping us be the best newspaper we can. Enjoy the season!

College graduates bring STEAM workshops to library

Think Like a Girl workshops are for ages 6 to 12 on Aug. 9 and Aug. 11
The Burlington County Library System
is excited to present a series of STEAM
workshops featuring fun, hands-on activities for ages 6 to 12 at all library branches
this summer.
Focusing on basic engineering principles, the workshops will be taught by members of Think Like a Girl, a startup company of young entrepreneurs seeking to empower girls to develop into our worlds
problem solvers.
Formed by a group of Rowan University
mechanical engineering students and re-

cent graduates, Think Like a Girl offers a

subscription service of engineering kits
marketed toward young girls to encourage
them to learn about engineering in ways
they enjoy. The company also reaches
out to the community to teach girls
about engineering and future STEM careers.
The workshops will be presented in two
Think Like a Girl Aspiring Engineer programs: Gemma Gadget for ages 6 to 9;
and Gaby Gadget for ages 10 to 12. Both
programs will feature fun hands-on activi-

ties that teach basic engineering principles

and STEAM skills.
The workshops are free, but space is limited and registration is required.
The schedule includes:
Gemma Gadget for ages 6 to 9 at the
Pinelands Library in Medford on July 5 at
6:30 p.m. and at the Evesham Library on
Aug. 9.
Gaby Gadget for ages 10 to 12 at the
Pinelands Library in Medford on July 7 at
6:30 p.m. and at the Evesham Library on
Aug. 11.

Brittney Raffo wins

first Meet of Champions
title in pole vault
Raffo tied personal best with 12-foot vault
on first attempt at the height to win competition
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Last spring, Seneca High
School junior Brittney Raffo competed in pole vault for the first
time in her life. Her highest vault
from the 2015 season was nine
feet.
One year later, Raffo has gone
from pole vault beginner to the
best in New Jersey.
Raffo won the girls pole vault
at the NJSIAA Meet of Champions on June 8, making a 12-foot
high vault on her first attempt to
clinch the win. The victory was a
high point in a season where
Raffo established herself as one
of the best vaulters in the state.
Raffo knew she had a chance to
contend for the title entering the
meet. The week prior to the Meet
of Champions, Raffo had a 12-foot
vault at the NJSIAA Group III
State Championships. It was

Raffos first time reaching the 12foot mark.

I was pretty confident going
into it, Raffo said. I knew what I
had to do and what I had to get
done.
Unlike the Meet of Champions,
Raffo only finished in second
place at the Group III championships, mostly because it took
more than one attempt for her to
get over 12 feet.
I knew that the other girls
were very good vaulters, Raffo
said. I thought the winning jump
would be around 12-6.
Raffo very nearly didnt make
it deep into the event. Raffo struggled on the opening height of 10feet, six-inches. She managed to
get over the height on her third
attempt and continue on.
It took me a little bit to get my
legs going, Raffo said.

graduating senior says she likes

to see her work through to the
end. Although high school is by
no means the end of her academic career, Welling admits she isnt
entirely sure what she wants to
do with her planned college degree, but she knows she wants to
engineer a product that will help

When Raffo reached the 12-foot

height mark, she knew getting
over it on her first attempt would
give her an advantage. When multiple athletes are tied at the same
height in pole vault, the athlete
who reaches the height in
the fewest attempts is placed
higher.

Raffo gave a lot of credit to her

coach, Brian Mondschein, with
helping her prepare for her firstplace vault.
It was just a matter of being
on the right pole and learning
which poles to use and which
jump, Raffo said. It was definitely a help.
Raffo made her 12-foot vault on
her first attempt and finally
clinched the win when Michelle
Rubinetti of Northern Valley
High School and Julia Dannenbaum of the Pingry School were

unable to make their attempts at

12-feet, six-inches.
Raffo said the Meet of Champions victory is easily the biggest
athletic accomplishment in her
life so far.
The most exciting part was
seeing my coaches and parents
reaction, she said.
After finishing with a pole
vault title in just her second outdoor track season, Raffo said she
cant wait to return to the runway
in 2017 to try to defend her Meet
of Champions title.

Survey open to all

SURVEY
Continued from page 1

RAY OF HOPE FUND

Were counting on you!
Make a fully tax-deductible contribution to
The Ray of Hope Fund today, and well be able to
help organizations in your neighborhood
tomorrow and for years to come.
The Ray of Hope Fund is part of the Community Foundation of South Jersey,
a 501c3 organization. The Ray of Hope Fund makes micro-donations to community
organizations that have a significant impact in the neighborhoods they serve.

rector of the Educational Information and Resource Center, presented to board members and attendees the results of a community survey intended to assist in
strategic planning for the following year and possibly years to
come. To gather results for this
survey that was conducted from
Tuesday, April 13 through Monday, May 2, the district held four
face-to-face sessions. It also released a web-based survey, capable of being submitted in hard
copy.
There are 605 school districts
in New Jersey thats really an
unheard of number. Were one of
only three states left in the country where you have local control
of school districts, Ivory said.
The upside is the ability for communities to really tap into their
own schools and have influence
and participation in a much
stronger way.
While the survey itself was
open to parents, students, business owners, elected officials and
all others within the community,
results yielded that out of 417
total responses, 67.63 percent of
respondents were students followed by 19.18 percent being public school parents.
This gives you a chance to really hear from the youngsters
who are in the schools every day
working with the teachers and
[who] have a really solid insight
in terms of whats happening,
Ivory said. You have great

youngsters here in Tabernacle.

Additional statistics presented
demonstrated that, while the
overwhelming majority of respondents feel very proud toward
various district components, approximately 20 percent of responding community residents
reported being unsatisfied with
the current level of connection
with Tabernacle schools. Despite
this number, 57.83 percent of respondents reported they stay connected to school issues through
the school website, whereas 45.10
percent said they receive news
and alerts through word of
mouth and 45.06 percent from flyers sent home from school.
Also, when asked what the top
three issues facing students today
are, 55.17 percent responded with
negative peer pressure while
51.23 percent reported drugs and
alcohol as a cause. This is especially
alarming
considering
many of the respondents were
students themselves. The district
hopes to use this information,
along with the knowledge attained from the rest of the survey,
to better understand and react to
areas needing improvement within the district.
You really need to be very
thankful and proud of your
Board of Education for even venturing forth to do this. Not only
did they venture forth to do this,
but they asked me to come in, and
we do this process very differently as those of you who participated know, and that is, this is an
open invitation, Ivory said. I
want you to recognize the effort
that your own board made to
bring all of you into this process.
