EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

GENERAL SESSIONS

At the APICS annual conference, business professionals, thought leaders, and innovators will share their knowledge, skills, and
experiences. Learn from todays Bill McDermott and Mel Robbins as they educate and inspire you to advance your productivity
and elevate your work performance.
Sunday, September 25, 9:30 a.m.11:00 a.m.

Bill McDermott
Chief Executive Officer | SAP

Growing up in working-class Long Island, a 16-year-old Bill traded three hourly wage jobs to buy
a small deli, which he ran by instinctively applying ideas that would be the seeds for his future
success. After paying for and graduating college, he talked his way into a job selling copiers doorto-door for Xerox, where he went on to rank number one in every sales position he held, eventually
becoming the companys youngest-ever corporate officer.
Eventually, he left Xerox and in 2002 became the unlikely president of SAPs flailing American
business unit. There, he injected enthusiasm and accountability into the demoralized culture
by scaling his deli, sales, and management strategies. In 2010, he was named co-CEO, and in 2014
became SAPs sole, and first non-European, CEO.
As the worlds leading provider of business software, SAPs more than 66,000 employees and vast
ecosystem enable 252,000 customers of all sizes in more than 25 industries and 180 countries
worldwide. SAP AG is headquartered in Germany, and McDermott is based at the North American
headquarters in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.
He has been instrumental in re-architecting the companys go-to-market strategy, closely aligning
the field organizations with the product development teams. He has earned numerous honors for
his business leadership, is an active board member for multiple organizations, and is a community
leader and advocate for corporate social responsibility.

Bill is the author of Winners Dream and will be doing a book signing
immediately following his session. Stop by Shop APICS to purchase

Senior Manager of Supply Chain Capability Development | BASF

Sales and operations planning (S&OP) is a cross-functional, collaborative process. Therefore, spending lots of money and
throwing numerous resources at the process will not guarantee a positive outcome; rather, it is teamwork that can enable
heightened performance and facilitate overall organizational success. The presenter of this educational session will
explain why conflict among team members and lack of agreement on the game plan can lead to disaster. Then, strategies
for resolution and consensus building will be shared. These tactics will help S&OP leaders build teams that accomplish
successful planning and execution, leverage information and communication to improve teamwork, and gain commitment
from key stakeholders.

Creating an effective communication plan is critical to change-management and project success. At a major distribution
center, team members recently experienced this firsthand while implementing a new work-management system. They
also noted that the workers most affected by communication issues are on the shop floor picking orders, packing
material, loading and unloading trucks, putting away new product, handling returns, and managing mountains of
paperwork. Furthermore, these employees have little or no access to email, and English is a second language for
many. Attend this educational session to learn how change-management professionals brought about significant
communication improvements at this business by replacing the typical digital exchanges with creative and fun
information-sharing alternatives.

Operational excellence is critical to business success, yet the vast majority of process-improvement plans fail to meet
expectations. Analytics, data, and consultants can develop a perfect process on paper, but real improvement requires the
people at each step of the process to change what they have done hundreds or even thousands of times. Furthermore,
they need to form new habits and collaborate effectively at every key handoff. This requires a new techniquevisual

eliminating all potential risk). Cognitive biases influence how we think, can lead to poor decisions and judgments, and
are very difficult to recognize in ourselves. This presentation will examine how cognitive biases influence our actions.
