WHAT WE ARE ABOUT TO LEARN

Identify regions under the normal curve
corresponding to different standard
normal values
Find the area of the region within the
normal curve.

The shape of the normal

distribution curve is ____________.

Answer: Bell-shaped

The mean, median, and mode are

equal and located at the
___________.

Answer: center of the

distribution

The curve is symmetrical about

the ___________ and is ____________.

Answer: mean/continuous

The curve never touches the

___________.

Answer: x-axis

PROPERTIES OF STANDARD NORMAL DISTRIBUTION

The normal distribution curve is

bell-shaped.
The mean, median, and mode are equal and
located at the center of the distribution.
The curve is symmetrical about the mean.
The curve is continuous.
The curve never touches the x-axis.

DENSITY CURVE
is the graph of a continuous probability
and must satisfy the following properties:
1. The total area under the curve must equal 1.
2. Every point on the curve must have a
vertical height that is 0 or greater. (That is,
the curve cannot fall below the x-axis.)

AREA AND PROBABILITY

Because the total area under the density curve is

equal to 1, there is a correspondence between area
and probability.

THE Z-TABLE

THE Z-TABLE
You can use the Z-table to find a full set of "less-than"
probabilities for a wide range of z-values. To use the Ztable to find probabilities for a statistical sample with
a standard normal (Z-) distribution, do the following:

1. Go to the row that represents the ones digit and

the first digit after the decimal point (the tenths
digit) of your z-value.
2. Go to the column that represents the second digit
after the decimal point (the hundredths digit) of
your z-value.
3. Intersect the row and column from Steps 1 and 2.

EXAMPLE #01
Compute the percent of population between 0 and 0.45
Start at the row
for 0.4
Read along until
0.45
There is the value
0.1736

EXAMPLE #01 (CONTD)

Compute the percent of population between 0 and 0.45

17.36% of the population are

between 0 and 0.45 Standard
Deviations from the Mean.

EXAMPLE #02
Percent of Population Z Between -1 and 2
Note: From 1 to 0
is the same as from
0 to +1:
At the row for 1.0,
first column 1.00,
there is the value
0.3413
At the row for 2.0,
first column 2.00,
there is the value
0.4772

EXAMPLE #02 (CONTD)

Compute the percent of population between 0 and 0.45

Add the two to get the total between

-1 and 2:
0.3413 + 0.4772 = 0.8185
So 81.85% of the population are
between -1 and +2 Standard
Deviations from the Mean.

STANDARD NORMAL DISTRIBUTION

68% of values are

within1 standard
deviation of the
mean

95% of values are

within 2 standard
deviations of the
mean

99.7%ofvaluesare
within3 standard
deviationsofthe
mean

PRACTICE #01
Using the provided Z-Table, find the Z-value that
corresponds to 42.22% of the population, as shown.

PRACTICE #02
Using the provided Z-Table, find the Z-value that
corresponds to 98.81% of the population, as shown.

PRACTICE #03
Using the provided Z-Table, find the Z-value that
corresponds to 12.3% of the population, as shown.

PRACTICE #04
Using the provided Z-Table, find the value of the
shaded (%) that corresponds to Z=-1.56, as shown.

PRACTICE #05
Using the provided Z-Table, find the value of the
shaded (%) that corresponds to Z=1.61, as shown.

LETS RECAP

_______% of values are within1 standard

deviation of the mean
_______% of values are within 2 standard
deviations of the mean
_______% of values are within3 standard
deviation of the mean

SOLVE ME!
Using the Z-table provided, find the area under
the standard normal curve:
1. Between z = 0 and z = 2.34 P(0 < z < 2.34).
2. Between z = 0 and z = 1.75 P(1.75 < z <0).
3. To the right of z = 1.11 P(z > 1.11).
4. To the left of

z = 1.93 P(z < 1.93).

5. Between z = 2 and z = 2.47 P(2 < z < 2.47).

6. Between z = 1.68 and z = 1.37 P(1.37 < z <
1.68).
7. To the left of z = 1.99 P(z < 1.99).
8. To the right of z = 1.16 P(z > 1.16).

ASSIGNMENT
Each month, an American household generates an average of
28 pounds of newspaper for garbage or recycling. Assume
the standard deviation is 2 pounds. Assume the amount
generated is normally distributed. If a household is selected
at random, find the probability of its generating more than
30.2 pounds per month.
