LESSON PLAN

CULTURE TEACHING ENGLISH AS L3
PROF.: ANNA PUJOL

LESSON PLAN
Level: P5 Third term.
Topic: Indian culture Lohri Festival.
Learning objectives:
Be aware of the similarities and differences between the both cultures (Indian and
Catalan).
Recognise some vocabulary related to the Lohri Festival.
Be able to participate actively in the activity.
Description:
This lesson plan is based on knowing the Indian culture, which belong to an Englishspeaking country, while children learn English. The session is divided in three parts:

Introduction:
When children arrive to the class, they will find a box in which there will be a letter
from India. The teacher will ask if they know something about that country and
he/she will read the letter. Continuing with the introduction, the teacher can make
some questions about legends in Catalonia in order to identify some similarities
with our culture.

Development:
Then, the teacher will play a video in which children will see some specific
elements of the Lohri Festival. During the video, the teacher can comment the
different elements to facilitate the comprehension by children. Moreover, the
teacher will specify some similarities with one of our holidays: Sant Joan. Hence,
the children will become aware of the relation between the both cultures (Indian
and Catalan cultures). Finally, there will be a lot of cards with different images of
those elements and these will be distributed around the classroom. They will have
to find the elements that appear in the video and some cultural items of our Sant
Joan Festival. When all the pictures have been found, students will have to classify
them in two columns: Punjab (India)/ Lohri Festival and Catalonia/ Sant Joan.

Conclusion:
To sum up, the teacher and every children will be sitting in circle. The teacher will
explain that Indian people use mandalas to relax themselves. In order to remember
all the cultural knowledge worked, students will have to say something learnt
during the session with a ball of yarn in their hands. When a child finishes to explain
the learnt information, he/she will have to throw the ball without dropping the
thread. At the end of the activity, the teacher will take a photo to show a special
mandala created by children with their knowledge.
