Hundreds gather for candlelight vigil
to mourn slain Marlton native and national
singing sensation Christina Grimmie
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
Once the sun had fully retreated from the skies above Marlton
on June 13, hundreds of tiny
flames slowly flickered to life
along a field near the township
municipal complex to illuminate
the teary eyes and sullen faces of
the mourners who huddled together for a candlelight vigil to remember slain Marlton native and
national
singing
sensation

Christina Grimmie.
Grimmies life was cut short
when on June 10 in Orlando, Fla.,
police say a man approached
Grimmie inside the Plaza Live
music venue after a late-night
performance and opened fire on
Grimmie during a meet and greet
with her fans.
Grimmie, age 22, was rushed to
a hospital in critical condition,
but ultimately died from her

Marcus Grimmie, the brother of slain Marlton native and nationally-known singer Christina Grimmie, is pictured in the top photo speaking about his sister before hundreds of
mourners (pictured in the bottom row of photos) during a candlelight vigil held near the Evesham Municipal Complex on June 13. Grimmie was shot on June 10 in Orlando, Fla.,
during a meet and greet with fans after a performance, and she later died from her injuries during the early morning hours of June 11.

Evesham Clean Communities

Coordinator Debbie Pease has received the Municipal Coordinator
Award from the New Jersey
Clean Communities Council.
The Evesham Clean Communities Program regularly reduces
litter to protect local lands and
waterways, helping ensure Evesham remains a desirable place to
live and work. Recently, Pease directed 25 volunteer groups that
received grant funds for cleaning
up township highways and roadways. The grant funds also
support educational programs
for Evesham elementary students.
These programs empower our
next generation, instilling practical lifelong lessons and letting
them know that they can effect
change, Pease said. Each one of
us can help prevent trash and litter in public places daily, just by

using trash and recycling receptacles. Please do your share to

help!
The Municipal Coordinator
Award is presented to an individual who has developed and implemented a comprehensive municipal litter abatement program and
who demonstrates ongoing support of the NJCCC.
Debbies passion for the environment translates through her
work, said NJCCC Executive Director Sandy Huber. She is constantly coming up with innovative ways to ensure Evesham residents, both young and old, are
well informed about local environmental issues and how they
can help.
NJCCC is a comprehensive,
statewide litter-abatement program that has served residents
and visitors for more than 25
years. Learn more at njclean.org.

The Sun
Summers officially here and
for Evesham that means plenty of
excuses to get out of the house
and enjoy the summer fun.
Once again kicking off the
summer activates in town will be
Eveshams annual Fourth of July
festivities.
As always, Evesham will celebrate the nations independence
with events to last all day long
throughout the Fourth of July
holiday, starting in the early
morning with the annual Mayors
Cup 5K Run / 1 Mile Fun Run on
Monday, July 4.
This year marks the ninth iteration of the event, and participants can pre-register through a
link at www.eveshamcelebrations.org until June 30 for a 5K fee
of $25 or 1 mile fee of $20.
Registration will also be available the day of the event starting
at 7 a.m. at the Main Street Fire
House, with the event itself be-

ginning at 8:30 a.m. and an

awards ceremony to be held afterward at 9:30 a.m.
The registration fee on the day
of the event for the 5K will rise to
$30.
Once the racers and walkers
have had their fun, at 10 a.m., kids
can register for the annual Kids
Bike Parade down Main Street
that will take place at 10:30 a.m.
Children up to grade five can
ride in the parade using their normal or decorated (safe and operational) bikes, or parents may
push children in strollers or wagons.
The short course takes kids
from the Main Street Firehouse
down to the Wiley Home at Plymouth Avenue, and as always parents are welcome to walk alongside their child.
After the kids have had their
parade, the townships annual Independence Day Parade will
begin down Main Street at 11 a.m.

in our opinion

Schools out for summer!

Stay involved this summer, and help us be the best we can be
hrow your hats in the air, pick
up a beach chair, put on a nice
pair of sandals and relax ...
summer is here!
Life changes here in New Jersey for
two-and-a-half months once school
lets out for summer recess. The kiddies are home, which makes us change
our normal routine. Traffic eases up at
the typical before-school and afterschool rushes, and families head out of
town for vacation.
We here at The Sun dont take vacations. Well, thats not true, but our dedication to providing the best coverage
of town doesnt waiver one bit. If anything, summer allows us to focus even
more on the special people, places and
things that make our town so wonderful.
Every summer, the end of the school

year means the temporary end of

school coverage stories and photos
of students and teachers doing a community service project, of high school
sports teams and of noteworthy accomplishments. But that doesnt mean
our pages will be blank.
True, summer often does signal a
slowdown in official town- and
school district-related business, but
there is plenty of newsworthy happenings around town to keep your interest
piqued.
Summer is a time when we often

reach out to you, our readers, for a little help.

Have an interesting story idea
about an annual summer activity you,
your family and/or your local group
partake in? Wed love to cover it.
Know someone or something that
deserves to be spotlighted in a special
way? Wed love to write about it.
Take photos of you and your family enjoying the warm summer weather, either in town or on your family vacation? Wed love to print them for
your neighbors to see.
Summer holds a special place in
everyones heart, even if youre not a
lover of sometimes-oppressive heat.
Help us make this summer special by
keeping in touch, providing us feedback and helping us be the best newspaper we can. Enjoy the season!

Grimmie remembered
for her love of family,

wounds during the early morning
hours of June 11.
Yet rather than only focus on
her untimely death, those who
spoke before the crowd at the
vigil chose to celebrate the parts
of Grimmies life that made her
who she was her musical talents, the countless fond memories
she shared with friends, her
strong Christian faith and her
deep love of family.
Marcus Grimmie, Christinas
brother, gave thanks for the outpouring of support in the wake of
Grimmies death from local community members, fans across the
nation and other musical celebrities.
During the attack on Grimmie,
police say her brother tackled her
assailant who was armed with
two small-caliber handguns, two
loaded magazines and a large
hunting knife, and shortly after,
the attacker shot and killed himself.
Orlando police have identified
the man suspected of killing
Grimmie as 27-year-old Kevin
James Loibl of St. Petersburg,
Fla., although at this time no motive for the shooting has been released.
She loved this town, she loved
this state, she loved singing, she
loved the lord and she loved me,
Marcus said. She was just my
baby sister.
Pastor Dave Cortner of Bethel
Baptist Church spoke of Grimmies strong commitment to her
faith, and recounted a story of
Grimmie having to overcome her
nerves before the first time she
sang before the churchs congregation.
Cortner also called attention to
a message Grimmie posted on
Twitter in February 2013 that
many of her fans and news outlets have been sharing since her
death in which Grimmie wrote,

Sometimes god allows terrible

things to happen in your life and
you dont know why, but that
doesnt mean you stop trusting
him.
To Christina herself, we
would say thank you for using
your incredible talent, making
this community proud, but more
importantly following our savior
Jesus Christ, Cortner said.
Grimmie began her rise to national prominence with a series
of videos she posted to YouTube
in 2009 where she sang covers of
songs such as Miley Cyrus
Party in the USA, Justin
Bieber's One Time and Celine
Dions My Heart Will Go On.
Those videos would reach millions of views, leading to Grimmie releasing her debut EP Find
Me in 2011 and performing on
tour and at events across the
country throughout the next several years.
Grimmie would reach was
what was perhaps the height of
her fame in 2014 when she competed on NBCs singing contest
The Voice, where she finished
in third place.
In an interview with The Sun
in January 2011, Grimmie said it
was still difficult for her to comprehend her sudden rise to fame,
even as she was headed to Los Angeles to audition for several
record companies.
Its already a big deal, and I
thank God for that every day,
Grimmie said then. Its very
much a big deal for me, and I
wake up in the morning and
think, is this really happening to
me? Im just a normal 16-year-old
girl who loves video games and
my fans.
A GoFundMe fundraising page
has been set up at www.gofundme.com/christinagrimmie
to raise money Grimmies family,
who moved with the singer to Los
Angeles several years ago to help
further her career.
By the time of the vigil on June
13, the fundraiser had already
reached more than $125,000.

Police officers sustain minor injuries

during arrest of Marlton man
The following reports are on
file with the Evesham Police Department:
An investigation began on May
28, at 11 p.m., when an Evesham
police officer observed a vehicle
being operated by a
driver with a suspended license.
The officer stopped
the vehicle and when
he approached the
driver; the vehicle sped away in a
reckless manner.
The officer attempted to stop
the vehicle but the driver refused
to stop for the officer and continued to drive recklessly while disobeying the officers signal to pull
over. Due to inherent risk of the
pursuit endangering public safety, the officer quickly terminated
the pursuit of the car.
The investigation of the pursuit led to the identification of

the driver. Officers responded to

his residence located in the unit
block of Plymouth Drive.
A subsequent search of the
home resulted in locating and arresting the driver of the vehicle.
Three officers suffered minor injuries during this investigation.
A man, age 30, of
Marlton, was charged
with
second-degree
eluding, two counts of
third-degree aggravated assault
on a law enforcement officer and
fourth-degree resisting arrest. He
was released after posting 10 percent of $7,500 bail.
