Configure Cisco Switch to 3Com Switch

Prerequisite: Cisco Switch 3com Switch

Who: DSO’s, FLO’s and school ICT person

Why: Cisco VLAN standards not compatible with other switch VLAN standards

To configure a Cisco Switch to not make use of the eduCONNECT VLAN’s and have it in situ as

a standard (dumb) switch it is advised that the first port of the switch is connected back to the

3Com switch. Firstly connect to the Cisco switch using a console cable and a terminal package

such as Hyperconnect/TeraTerm.

Instructions

1. Authenticate to the switch using the passwords supplied by the school.

2. Then issue the following commands on the Cisco Switch

Switch>En “Enter enable password here “ You will have a # prompt instead of the > prompt

3. Type in the following commands which ensures that the switch will not automatically configure VLAN information onto other Cisco devices on the network (some Cisco IOS versions do not have these command if so ignore)

vlan database

vtp transparent

exit

The following lines places the first port f0/1 to ignore information up to or down to other switches on the network in regards to VLan configuration

Configure terminal ( or conf t ) interface FastEthernet0/1 description Connected to 3Com Switch spanning-tree bpdufilter enable spanning-tree portfast ( Ignore the subsequent warning )

The following line ensures that management of the switch is still capable via telnet sessions

Once the Cisco switch has been reconfigured then configure the port on the 3Com 4400/3300 switch the same as a standard port on the first switch on the network to connect to either an Admin or Curriculum workstation. ( ie Untagged Port ) If the switch is not configured then leave as is and the Cisco switch should then work in the same Vlan as that switch.
