Solving a System of Equations Algebraically using Substitution

Ex #1: y = x 2
y + 4x = 13
1) Solve one of the equations
for x or y.
2) Substitute the expression
into the other equation.
3) Solve the equation.
4) Solve for the other
variable by substituting
into either original.
5) Check solution in both
original equations.

Ex #2: y + 1 = 3x
x=y-2

Exit Ticket
Solve the following systems of equations by the substitution method.

3y + 2x = 12

2. x 5 = 3y
y 2x = 10

Substitution Method HW
1)

y = 4x - 28
y = 2x + 10

2)

x - 2y = -2
y = 2x + 4

3)

x = y + 20
x + y = 84

4)

3x + 4y = 15
y=x+9

5) y = 6x -11
-2x 3y = -7

6) 2x 3y = -1
y=x1

7) y = -2
5x 4y = -3

8) -7x -2y = -13

x 2y = 11

9) -5x + y = -2
-3x + 6y = -12

10) -3x 8y = 20
-5x + y = 19
