Taking it national: Amy Abe wins silver award for teaching

excellence
Jun 13, 2016

Amy Abe is no stranger to bringing home awards. Already a winner of two

major awards this past year, Amy added the silver Excellence in Teaching award
from the Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) when she attended the
celebration last week in Quebec City.
The award is given to an instructor that exhibits consistent excellence in
teaching and has had a significant impact on the personal and academic growth
of students.
Although she has become one of the colleges most distinguished employees,
with both the Jaye Frederickson Award for Teaching Excellence and the Society
for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education award for Educational Leadership,
Amy is quick to push the focus onto her Language Training team in the
department of Foundational, Career & Intercultural Studies.
Its great to win an award, but I really want to point out that Im part of a
great team here, she says candidly. Our focus is on creating amazing out-ofthe-box ways to engage students.
Amy Abe has won three major awards this past year.
Amy has been sharing her innovative ideas at NorQuest for almost nine years,
and has been working on a variety of projects to go along with teaching in the
ESL department. Currently shes working on a first of its kind report exploring
how to indigenize the ESL Intensive curriculum, and has co-written an online
textbook that combines language, culture, and technology, and opens doors for
students and educators in rural areas.
The college is super supportive. I have lots of ideas on how to create learning
environments that remove barriers and NorQuest lets me do that, she says.
They make sure the doors are wide open for collaboration and innovation.
While she enjoyed travelling to Quebec to accept her silver medal award, it
wasnt her first time in the French-speaking province. Amy studied Theatre and
English at Bishops University in Quebec and developed her love of language
while writing and directing plays for the theatre.
It was in Quebec that Amy authored two plays, one a national award winner,
that have been produced throughout Canada and across the world. One based is
on a short story by Alistair MacLeod, written in Newfoundland dialect, and the
other is an interpretive piece called Adrift. And while she hasnt penned her
third play yet, its certainly something that she has brewing.

I have a play in the back of my mind that Id love to write, but my priority is
my work right now. Ive focused a bit more on writing textbooks rather than
creative writing, she said.
Now added to her hardware collection, Amys national Teaching Excellence
award is a tribute to how dedicated she is to her work.
Congratulations Amy on another amazing achievement!
