Warning
Simpson Strong-Tie Company Inc. structural connectors, anchors, and
other products are designed and tested to provide specified design loads.
To obtain optimal performance from Simpson Strong-Tie Company Inc.
products and achieve maximum allowable design load, the products must
be properly installed and used in accordance with the installation instructions and design limits provided by Simpson Strong-Tie Company Inc. To
ensure proper installation and use, designers and installers must carefully
read the following General Notes, General Instructions For The Installer and
General Instructions For The Designer, as well as consult the applicable
catalog pages for specific product installation instructions and notes.
Proper product installation requires careful attention to all notes and
instructions, including these basic rules:
1. Be familiar with the application and correct use of the product.
2. Follow all installation instructions provided in the applicable catalog,
website, Installers Pocket Guide or any other Simpson Strong-Tie
publications.
3. Install all required fasteners per installation instructions provided
by Simpson Strong-Tie Company Inc.: a) use proper fastener type; b)
use proper fastener quantity; c) fill all fastener holes; d) do not overdrive
or underdrive nails, including when using gun nailers; and e) ensure
screws are completely driven.
4. Only bend products that are specifically designed to be bent. For
those products that require bending, do not bend more than once.
In addition to following the basic rules provided above as well as all notes,
warnings and instructions provided in the catalog, installers, designers,
engineers and consumers should consult the Simpson Strong-Tie
General Notes
a. Simpson Strong-Tie Company Inc. reserves the right to change
specifications, designs, and models without notice or liability for
such changes.
b. Steel used for each Simpson Strong-Tie product is individually
selected based on the products steel specifications, including strength,
thickness, formability, finish, and weldability. Contact Simpson StrongTie for steel information on specific products.
c. Unless otherwise noted, dimensions are in inches, loads are in pounds.
d. Unless otherwise noted, welds, screws, bolts and nails may not
be combined to achieve highest load value. 8d (0.131"x2 1/2"), 10d
(0.148"x3"), and 16d (0.162"x3 1/2") specify common nails that meet the
requirements of ASTM F1667. When a shorter nail is specified, it will be
noted (for example 8dx1 1/2). Refer to Simpson Strong-Tie Nailing Guide,
NDS (National Design Specification) and ASTM F1667 (American
Society of Testing and Materials) for more nail info.
e. Do Not Overload. Do not exceed catalog allowable loads, which would
jeopardize the product.
f. Unless otherwise noted, allowable loads are for Douglas Fir-Larch
under continuously dry conditions. Allowable loads for other species
or conditions must be adjusted according to the code. In many
cases, Simpson Strong-Tie code reports will indicate loads derived
from Doug Fir header material only. However under ICC-ES AC13,
loads for Douglas Fir are the same as LVL, LSL, PSL, Glulam and
Southern Pine, since the specific gravity of these wood species fall
within the specific gravity range of the AC13 criteria. The section
from the AC13 criteria indicating the range of specific gravity reads
as follows: 3.2.3 The species of lumber used shall have a specific
gravity not greater than 0.55 as determined in accordance with the
NDS. This chart shows specific gravity for the different wood species:

h. Unless otherwise noted, bending steel in the field may cause fractures
at the bend line. Fractured steel will not carry load and must be
replaced.
i. A fastener that splits the wood will not take the design load. Evaluate
splits to determine if the connection will perform as required. Dry wood
may split more easily and should be evaluated as required. If wood
tends to split, consider pre-boring holes with diameters not exceeding
75% of the nail diameter (2012 NDS 11.1.6.3).
j. Wood shrinks and expands as it loses and gains moisture, particularly
perpendicular to its grain. Take wood shrinkage into account
when designing and installing connections. Simpson Strong-Tie
manufactures products to fit common dry lumber dimensions. If
you need a connector with dimensions other than those listed in
this catalog, Simpson Strong-Tie may be able to vary connector
dimensions; contact Simpson Strong-Tie. The effects of wood

Cumulative Overturning
Key Consideration in
Strong-Wall Shearwall
Specification Process
When specifying a pre-manufactured shearwall for a project, several
factors need to be considered, such as load values, seismic/wind
requirements, wall width and height, wall placement, etc. Cumulative
Overturning is another critical factor often overlooked in multi-story
applications.
Steel Strong-Wall

Cumulative Overturning

Reference
2nd-Story
Shear Load
moment arm. As illustrated, if the same base shear is applied over two
stories, the overturning at the base of the wall exceeds the one-story
application by 60% (Figure B). When proper consideration of cumulative
overturning is included in the design, the total allowable shear load on a
stacked wall is reduced (Figure C).

*Example calculations:
(2nd-Story Shear Load x Total Story Height) + (1st-Floor Shear Load x 1st-Story Height) = Overturning Moment > Baseline Limit of the Lowest Panel
(3,000 lbs. x 18') + (2,000 lbs. x 9') = 72,000 ft-lbs. > 45,000 ft-lbs.
(Overturning Moment) (Moment Arm) = Overturning Force > Baseline Limit of the Lowest Panel (72,000 ft-lbs.) (2 ft.) = 36,000 lbs. > 22,500 lbs.
Note: Loads shown are for illustrative purposes only. Redistribution of earthquake loads per building code requirements will compound the effects
of cumulative overturning.

1. Anchor reinforcement conforms to ACI 318-11, section D.5.2.9 and performance
was validated through full scale testing.
2. Minimum concrete compressive strength, f'c = 2500 psi.
3. Closed tie anchor reinforcement to be ASTM A615 Grade 60 (min.) #4 rebar.
4. Grade beam longitudinal and tie reinforcement shall be specified by the registered
design professional for flexure and shear loading. Design should consider project
specific design loads and allowable soil pressure.
5. Simpson Strong-Tie recommends using the tabulated minimum LRFD-applied
seismic design moment to ensure grade-beam design flexure and shear strength
is adequate to prevent plastic hinge formation under demands associated with
anchorage forces corresponding to ACI 318-11, Section D.3.3.4.3.
34
High-Strength

6. Designer may use reduced moment due to applied SSW lateral load. Minimum
moment shall be the lesser of the tabulated moment or the amplified LRFD design
moment for seismic: (ASD Shear/0.7) x o x SSW height for grade beam design.
7. Minimum grade beam design moment for wind and seismic in Seismic Design
Category A and B and detached one- and two-family dwellings in SDC C:
(ASD Shear/0.6) x SSW height.
8. Closed tie may be single piece hoop or two piece assembly with a u-stirrup with
135 degree hooks and a top cross tie cap.
9. Closed tie anchor reinforcement quantity is per wall for the 12" and 15" wall
models, and per anchor for the 18", 21" and 24" models.

Strong-Wall SB
Installation
All panels may be field trimmed to a minimum of 74". Trim height from top
of panel only, do not trim from sides or bottom. Drilling holes in the
Strong-Wall SB is not allowed except as shown on page 93.
Prior to placing adjacent studs or panels, tighten the slotted holdown nuts.
Minimum clearance of 1" from panel edge is required to access nuts.
For holdowns, per ASTM standards, anchor bolt nuts should be finger-tight
plus 1/8 turn with a hand wrench. An impact wrench should not be used.
Maximum shim thickness between the Strong-Wall SB and top plates or
header is 7/8" using Simpson Strong-Tie Strong-Drive "x6" SDS
Heavy-Duty Connector screws.
Walls may also be used in 2x6 wall framing. Install the panel flush to
the outside face of the framing and add furring to the opposite side.
Panels over 18' tall require (1) full-height 2x6 stud each side attached
with 10d commons at 16" o.c.
Supplemental bearing plates are available to increase design values.
Use in engineered applications when specified by the designer.
See ICC-ES ESR-2652 for allowable load tables.

Installation
Portal frame connection kit is required for portal frame applications.
All panels may be trimmed to a minimum of 74". Trim height from
top of panel only, do not trim from sides or bottom.
Maximum shim thickness between the Strong-Wall SB and top plates or
header is 7/8" using Simpson Strong-Tie Strong-Drive " x 6" SDS
Heavy-Duty Connector screws installed from front and back of panel.
Walls may also be used in 2x6 wall framing. Install the panel flush to the
outside face of the framing and add furring to the opposite side.
Supplemental bearing plates are available to increase design values.
Use in engineered applications when specified by the designer. See
page 38 for models and ICC-ES ESR-2652 for allowable load tables.
Walls may be installed with solid or multi-ply headers, see page 99
Detail 5/SWSB4 for fastening and furring requirements.

1. The maximum induced bending moment, shear and axial forces shown may
be reduced linearly if the applied lateral shear load is less than the allowable
in-plane shear load listed on pages 44 and 45.
2. The maximum shear and axial load are constant along the length of the
beam member. In a double portal system the moment reduces linearly from
maximum value at the beam ends to zero at the beam mid-span. In a single
portal system the moment reduces linearly from maximum value at the end
with the SWSB to zero at the end with the column.
3. The header member allowable stresses may be increased by 60% (duration
of load factor) in accordance with table 2.3.2 of the NDS when designing the
header member.

distributed load not exceeding the allowable vertical load. Alternatively, the
load may be applied anywhere along the width of the panel if imposed by a
continuous bearing vertical load transfer element, such as a rim board or beam.
For eccentric axial loads applied directly to the panel, the allowable vertical load
shall be divided by two.
4. First-floor panel drift must comply with code drift limits. Calculate the drift using

3. The designer must verify that the cumulative overturning moment at the
base of the first-story Strong-Wall SB does not exceed the allowable base
moment capacity. See design example on page 49 for example.
4. Anchor tension based on overturning moment may be determined using equation
on page 51.
5. High-strength anchor bolts are required for seismic applications and where
the anchor tension force at wind design shear exceeds the allowable load for
standard strength bolts tabulated on page 51.

Wood Strong-Wall
The Wood Strong-Wall shearwall can be
installed around window and door openings,
on garage wing walls, interior walls or any
other locations where increased lateral
resistance is required. Wood Strong-Wall
shearwalls can reduce the amount of wall
space required for shearwalls, allowing for
more windows and doors in house designs.
Prefabricated: The high-strength wall comes with the
sheathing and holdowns pre-attached. Additional installation
hardware is included

1. A double-wall garage portal system consists of 2 walls with a header spanning over the top and
connected as shown.
2. A single-wall garage portal system consists of 1 wall with a header spanning over the top and
connected as shown.
3. Recommended header moisture content is 19% or less at time of installation.
4. The minimum header sizes listed are the minimum required for lateral rigidity of the portal system.
Larger headers may be required due to vertical loading.
5. Portal walls may be installed with sheathing facing inside or outside.
6. Typical shim thickness between the Strong-Wall shearwall and header is 7/8" or less using
Simpson Strong-Tie Strong-Drive 1/4"x6" SDS Heavy-Duty Connector screws.
7. See allowable vertical load table on page 65 for Wood Strong-Wall shearwall maximum compression
and tension capacities.
8. Allowable shear capacities must be reduced as limited by anchor bolt capacities for installations on CMU.

Raised-Floor Walls
Raised-floor (-RF) walls are designed and tested for installation on top of raised
wood floor systems. All second-story applications must use the raised-floor models.
Raised-floor walls are compatible with both solid-sawn lumber and I-joist floor systems.
Simpson Strong-Tie Strong-Drive SDS Heavy-Duty Connector screws pre-installed in
both the top and bottom of the wall allow for fast installation to the top plate and floor
framing elements.
Raised-floor walls are code listed for use on the second floor of wood light-frame
construction. Simpson Strong-Tie recommends the Simpson Strong-Tie Takeup
Device, (SW-TUD1KT), be used at the second floor to compensate for wood shrinkage
and settlement due to dead load.
First-story walls of a two-story application may be either standard or raised-floor walls.

Wood Strong-Wall
1. The height of the garage curb above the garage slab is critical for rough
header opening on portal walls.
2. See Garage Portal on page 60 for curb height tables.
3. Raised-Floor Wood Strong-Wall shearwalls require 1 1/2" or 3" of
concrete on either side. Allow 1 1/2" or 3" of concrete on either side of the
template if the design is for a wood 1st-floor or 2nd-floor application.
4. For RF Raised-Floor walls, use the corresponding Standard Wood
Strong-Wall shearwall template as required.
5. Templates are recommended and are required in some jurisdictions.
6. Foundation design by Designer.
7. Templates are the same for 4" or 6" thick walls.
