Chinese words are made up of one or more syllables, each of
which is represented in the written language by a character.
These syllables can be divided into initials (consonants) and
finals (vowels or vowels followed by either n or ng). In spoken
Chinese, the consonant finals are often not fully sounded. A
full list of initials and finals, along with the closest equivalent
sound in English appears below. There are, however, some
sounds that are unlike anything in English. In this pronunciation guide, words containing these sounds are given in
Chinese characters as well; ask a Chinese person to pronounce
them for you.

Nouns
Singular and plural forms of nouns are nearly always the same.
For example, sh can mean either book or books depending
on the context:

wor mai-lur lyang-bun shoo
pngyoumen
pung-yoh-mun
friends
General / Nouns
w mile ybn sh
wor mai-lur yee-bun shoo
H O W T H E L A N G U A G E W O R K S n

However, -men is not used for the plural when numbers are
involved as the plural is obvious from the context:
sge pngyou
sur-gur pung-yoh
four friends

Articles
There is no equivalent in Chinese for either the definite article
the or the indefinite articles a and an. The exact meaning
will be clear from the context or word order. Therefore, zzh
(magazine) can mean a magazine or the magazine depending
on the context.
If you want to be more precise, you can use ni (that) or zhi
(this) with the appropriate measure word (see page 262).
The number y (one), along with the appropriate measure
word (see page 262) can also be used to translate a/an. But
often in such sentences yi is either unstressed or omitted altogether, leaving just the measure word:
w xing mi ybn zzh
wor hsyang mai yee-bun dzah-jur
or:
Articles / Adjectives

Adjectives
Adjectives are placed before the noun and usually the word de
is added between the adjective and the noun:

Adjectival Verbs
Some verbs also function as adjectives and are known as adjectival verbs. In sentences using an adjectival verb, the word
order is:
noun subject + hn + adjectival verb
The word hn has little meaning, unless it is stressed, when it
means very.

The above phrases can also be translated as this one is attractive and that one is expensive, but the exact meaning will
be clear from the context. The following are added after the
adjective or adjectival verb to indicate the degree of comparison:

When the correct measure word is not known, the best solution is to use ge.
In a dialogue, when it is clear from the context what is being
referred to, then the noun may be omitted and only the
demonstrative and measure word are used:

Yes and No
Chinese has no standard words for yes and no, but you can
often use sh(de) (yes, it is the case), dule (yes, thats right) and
b sh (no, it is not the case).
The most common way of saying yes is to repeat the verb
of the question; to say no, repeat the verb of the question
together with b or mi as required:
n yu kng ma?
nee yoh koong mah
yu
yoh
yes
P r e p o s i t i o n s / Ye s a n d N o
mi yu
may yoh
no

mi yu/mi qguo
may yoh/may chew-gwor

Imperatives
To make an imperative in Chinese, pronounce the verb in an
emphatic way:
zhnzh!
jahn-joo
stop!
gnchqu!
gun-choo-chew
get out!
Ye s a n d N o / I m p e r a t i v e s

When telling the time, the word din is added to the number
to indicate the hours. Zhng (clock) is optional and is placed
at the end of most time expressions. The word fn (minutes) is
added to the number of minutes.
