If applicable, how does this lesson connect to the interests and cultural
backgrounds of your students?
All of the 1st grade students really seemed to enjoy drama, especially:
o Drama where they improvised scenes
o Drama where they were able to tell jokes and laugh
o They enjoyed being able to move around in drama
o Many students enjoyed pretending to be someone they are not
Students have a background in drama from the Boys and Girls Club
The students really enjoy fairytales
Writing is a form of punishment at the BGC
Students are learning how to spell the days of the week and months
The students love working with technology and use IPads on a daily basis in their
classroom.
A lot of students love to color and draw
All of the students know American Sign Language
Writing Lesson:
For this lesson, I really want to focus on allowing the students to develop a positive
relationship with writing. In order to do this, I would like to provide the students
with an opportunity to write about things that interest them. Students will have the
choice between writing their own play or fairytale. I feel that having the students
write about things they like to do will help them to develop a positive relationship
with writing.
If applicable, how does this lesson connect to/reflect the local community?
The students participate in drama on a weekly basis at the BGC. The students
have experience with improve activity, but the ultimate goal of their drama
teacher is to have them audition for the yearly play.
The students learned a lot about fairytales in their 1st grade classroom and they
showed interest in doing more with fairytales.

Once students have completed writing their own play or fairytale, I want to give
them the opportunity to share with their peers. This could include acting out a
part of their play with a peer or reading their fairytale aloud.
Other Activities:
Working on the Ipad
Playing sparkle or other spelling games to learn their days and months
Practicing American Sign Language
Creating art projects, such as coloring and drawing
How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional
language support?
Students can draw out their fairytale or play instead of using words
Allow students to work with a partner that speaks their native language
Allow students to write in their native language and translate later with a partner
Be aware of my own language and pronunciation
