Dear Reader,

All students at SUIS GuBei are talented in at least one way. It could be
art, acting, or just being especially good at a certain instrument. To celebrate
the last week of school before the summer vacation, the Creativity Festival
takes place, when all the students of the school have a chance to show off their
skills to everyone else, be it in the form of a song, painting, or in the case, of
the News Reporting activity, this newsletter you are currently holding in your
hands.
The week before, students signed up for 5 activities they would be interested in taking during the course of the Creativity Festival. This is one thing
that sets this year apart from the last, when students were able to try 3 different activities during the week. Instead, this year teachers have students focused on one project that spans three days, finally having the finished result
presented during the last day before the summer holidays. There were 28 activities in total, including many ones that can really help students to express
their creativity, like the Treasure Hunting group where students get to draw up
their own treasure map along with codes and have their classmates find the
treasure; or the Film group that allows students to develop their filming skills
by going through the entire process of producing a video.
The students that participated in the News Reporting activity have spent all the time they have at school
travelling to the other activities available to interview both students and teachers to get their ideas and opinions
on the activity they are taking part in or supervising respectively. Then, they gather all the reports written by
each group of two and produce this newsletter as a final product, also making a video out of the recordings of
interviews and what goes on in each activity as well.
After the stress of exams, the Creativity Festival is a good way for students to unwind from the past
few weeks of tedious revising, and let their creativity flow freely. During the course of this week, every student will have completed something they will remember fondly of. However, the best thing about the Creativity Festival is that it ends the year with a bang, having students work with people they have probably never
talked to before, and making new memories that they can keep with them even after they left SUIS to go
abroad or to another school. Even if they leave the school, there will probably still be a moment in their lives
when they share memories with another person and say, There was this one time at SUIS when

First Hand Experience with Reporting

As being a first-time reporter and cameraman, I have enjoyed this process of interviewing different teachers
and students about the activities they have done during the SUIS Creativity Week. It was a great experience and I believe it would be very beneficial for me personally. As before, I watched Wolf Blitzer and
Anderson Cooper on CNN and enjoyed listening to them talking about the latest political, U.S. national and
international news as well as the 2016 U.S. Presidential Elections and how they cover these stories perfectly
and confidently. Being a reporter and reporting news from an outsiders point-of-view is very interesting
even I was a bit nervous for the first time.
The thing which I enjoyed the most was interviewing people I never knew before and visiting different
rooms where different activities are being held, we as reporters are the only people who could observe and
even try all the different activities in the school, talking to the participants about their opinions and then reporting from a 360 degree angle to cover every single aspect, just like CNNs motto: Go there

Board Game Making
In the Board Game
Making club, 19 students in
the classroom were split up
into small groups of three
to five people per group,
and each group was brainstorming ideas for their
board games, with some
groups ahead of others and
already sketching out their
drafts.
This activity benefits individuals by helping
students think in sequence,
develop their creativity,
and also improve their
mathematical thinking. The
teacher provided them with
plastic dice, cards for Monopoly-style games, and

finally large pieces of

Mandala Book Making

Another group we visited was the
Mandala Book Making group in
room N302.
Mrs Leveel said that
making mandalas helps people to relax as
they draw the
patterns which

my partner and I found ridiculously complicated. However, sitting in a quiet room,

using a black pen to
sketch the intricate, detailed swirls and other
shapes within the patterns can be quite relaxing to a student stressed
out from exams. Materials for making the man-

dalas were simply an A2

piece of paper and a thin
black pen or marker. Also
required would be a large
amount of artistic talent
and skill, because drawing
these detailed patterns
would be no easy task.
The mandalas produced
by students in the club

would then be used in a book.

It was hard to find someone willing to be interviewed, as
some people didnt understand
English. Although we tried inter-

viewing them in
Chinese, they
refused to be
questioned.
Joyce Shi from
class 8VR, on
the other hand,
agreed to be interviewed. When
asked why she
joined, she replied
that she quite simply, liked art. She also said that
the process was time consuming

and helped a person relax through

the long process of drawing.

Observational Drawing
We were
unfortunately unable to interview Ms.
Lucinda
Holmes due
to her being
busy at a
meeting.

Mrs. Jovie Narciso was

left in charge of the
club, so we asked for an
interview from her, but
were denied because she
happened to be a science
teacher and not an art
teacher and couldnt answer most of our questions.

We did manage
to interview a student,
Kathy Liu from 9MS,
about her thoughts on
the Observational Drawing club. It seems that
Kathy was an avid art
student, and was working on one of the best

pieces in the room when
we had a look around.
She said that joining the
club benefits her by giving her a good time to
practice her skills for the
future. Kathy is enthusiastic about the club and
really enjoys it because
she has an interest for
drawing and art in gen-

eral. She recommends people to

take up observational drawing because it makes for
good practice if
they wish to go to
an art college in the
future.

World Scholars Cup

The World
Scholars Cup room was
full of activity when we
entered, with multiple
groups of students clustered in different parts of
the room researching on
electronic devices for an
upcoming debate. It was
hard to find someone
willing to be inter-

viewed, since
everyone was so
absorbed in their
work, but we
eventually got
someone to speak
to. As with all
activity clubs
around the
school, there
were students

who
were
interested
in the
activity
and
then
there
were those who were not as enthusiastic about
the club, like Justin Lee from 8JN.
We interviewed Justin about his current situation in the WSC. When asked about
why he joined, he responded with a simple I
was forced to. After that, he talked about
how boring and dull the WSC was. Guess debating is not for everyone.

TED Talks
TED Talks allows students to share their own
personal ideas to the
other students in the
club. For example,
Gaide is seen
here speaking
about How
Video Games
Affect Us. Students also have
to prepare a
presentation
such as a
Powerpoint to back up
their statement with images or other media.

Business Name

Acrylic Painting
The Acrylic Painting club,
led by Mr. Richard Tuck and Mr.
Mark Shevlane, focuses on, quite
simply, painting. When I entered
the room, I found it to be especially quiet, with
all the students
completely immersed in their
paintings. It appeared that the
students were
using a picture of
Mr. Tuck as a
reference image
and painting its
likeness on a
canvas. In my opinion, this was a

really good activity to

join if you are a person
who has an interest in art,
likes to paint as a hobby
and is looking for a challenge,
and
wishes
to pursue art in
the future.

Treasure Hunt
The Treasure Hunt club
was led by Mrs. Kendra Lindsay,
in room N205. The first thing we
noticed when we walked in was
that this was the only room we

visited so far that was decorated to

fit the activity theme. Pirate flags
were hung up on the walls, as well
as various pirate phrases and treas-

ure maps. In the middle of the

room was a cardboard chest
stuffed with golden streamers. In
this club, students made up codes
for other students to decipher, as
well as clues leading to the treasure, which was in
this case a chest of
snacks. We interviewed Max
Zhong from 7VM
when all the other
students had returned. He told us
that he joined because it was fun
and he liked pirates. To him,
making treasure

hunts for other people helps improve his creativity, math and
thinking skills.

Basketball Activity In SUIS

SUIS is a school that not only focus on the grade of the students. This school also focuses on a lot of
other things like P.E.. The picture below shows the basketball academy activity for SUIS students that
are preparing for next years basketball team.

These four pictures show three teachers teaching basketball and one helper named Jason
from grade 11 to help teachers by showing the students his own skills.

Every end of the year SUIS will have a Creativity week for students to choose an activity they want to join. For example, there are basketball, judo, MUN, Music , Baseball,
treasure hunt and a lot of different activities.

Competition
Basketball competition is the best bay to practice for the future competitions, they dribble, pick and roll, run, pass, shoot, get rebounds,
block shots and steal. In one game, they did very well on those skills. It
was also a fair game, their scores are very close, they all
have the center to get the rebound
and they all have the shooting
guard to get points, which is the
most important things Mr.Hao
cares about when we play a game.
In the competition, students show
really good skills , and almost all
of them shows very
good understanding of these skills of
playing basketball, like Alex Zhao in
the second picture. His jump shots are
very good because he puts his hand
very straight and high so it is very hard
to block his shots.
During the game, I think we can learn a
lot about other basketball skills like
Alexs jump shot and Richards controlling of the ball.

After the competition

After the competition, the students are
very tired and Mr. Hao use a game to
help students to relax. In this game,
Mr.Hao lets students practice passing
balls to relax their bodies.

FILM: COLOR AND DANCE (IT 2)

One of the activity groups my partner Andre and I interviewed was Filming: Color and
Dance led by Mr. Timothy Booth. Andre and I
wondered why basketballs were put in the room
when this group apparently wasnt a PE Class in
one of the IT Rooms.
Mr. Booth told us that through this activity,
students can learn how to shoot and edit films using computers, cameras and even cell phones as
well as learning about the film process. Last but
not least, students can express their creativity
through their films.
We interviewed David Chazan Paul from
class 6JG. David said the reason he joined this club
is because it is fun and he likes filming as well as
working with people you dont know to make
something amazing.

Digital music composition (IT 1)

Another activity group which we interviewed was the Digital Music
Composition group led by Mr. Eoin Mcilduff. In their activity group has a total
of 19 students in IT Room Number 1.
Mr. Mcilduff told us the best thing about this curriculum is that students
will learn how to follow instructions under
Mcilduffism as well as learning how to become
creative and creating musical patterns. Mr. Mcilduff
also introduced us to the software which his students are using: FL Studio. One of Mr. Mcilduffs
students, Clement Chevalier from Grade 6ET told
us that he is very interested in composing music
and using computers which makes it perfect for him
to join this club.

CHINESE PAPER CUTTING

AND CALLIGRAPHY (M308)

The Chinese Paper Cutting and Calligraphy

group was led by Mr. Bert Wang and has a total of 14
students in room M308.
Mr. Wang told us Chinese Paper Cutting and
Calligraphy helps achieve inner peace and can improve
your Chinese handwriting. So if you have trouble with
your Chinese teacher about your messy handwriting, go
try out Chinese Calligraphy.
We interviewed Angela Huang from Class 9RB. Angela
told us she personally loves the Chinese culture, as well
as because she would like to improve her handwriting.
Angela said she would recommend this activity to others who are interested in either the Chinese language
and culture or will pursue Chinese as a college degree.

MODEL UNITED NATIONS (DRAMA STUDIO)

When we entered the Drama

Studio, the MUN Group delegates
from different nations were speaking their views about North Korean
Nuclear Tests.
Due to various discussions
being held when we entered, we did
not get a chance to interview any of
the participants or any of the teachers.
Even though we did not get a chance
to interview MUN Participants about their
views, we can still see the delegates are
busy but enjoying these discussions to improve their stage skills which we believe is
highly favored and recommended.

Chess of all kinds (M208)

The Chess of all kinds activity group led by Ms.
Jia Dian Qin in Room M208 was very entertaining, as students are able to enjoy various types of chess from around
the world.
Students in this club when we entered were all focusing on Poker, Three Kingdoms Killing Cards as well
as Checkers or Chess. Owen Pan from class 8JJ seemed to
be very interested and skilled at Three Kingdoms Killing. Owen told us: Man, its my thing, Im just good at
it and I like it!

YARN BOMBING (LIBRARY)

The Yarn Bombing activity group in the Library led by
Ms. Hana was interesting to see. Students were covering all the
staircases in the library with yarn.
What was even more interesting was one students
views on the club. She replied to Andres question of Why did
you join this club and said, I joined this club so I could have
the skills to make my future mother in law satisfied.

CHINESE DRAMA AND

when we interviewed
them.
Cici Wang from

of their performance. Cici
said she liked the Chinese
Arts and would like to improve her acting skills
through this opportunity.

What is Mixed Martial Arts about?

Many people believe the Mixed
Martial Arts ECA is just to just
teach how to hit or injure another person. But thats not it!
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)
teaches students how to defend
themselves by using their opponents attacks against them. And
moreover, it teaches them the
defense and attack arts correctly. Believe it or not, many
instructors just teach the basic
defense or attack moves, not
bothering to check if students
are doing them properly. This is
really dangerous, as it is possible for students to injure themselves or others in the process.
Also, without proper correction,
students would believe they are
doing everything correctly, thus
resulting in major errors if ever
faced with a situation in real-

life which requires them to use

their skills.
But this class is
different. As it
consists of 3 different types of
martial arts: judo,
kickboxing and
boxing, it has already been
stated that the teachers in
charge would have to have a
large range of abilities. Not
only that, but the instructors kept a close
eye on the students,
and immediately corrected them if they
made a mistake.

Why Did You Join?

We talked to physics teacher Mr.
Michael Ng, who told us that he
was there because he wanted to
learn something useful for his
daughter, so she could defend herself. He is also acting as a demonstrator, and helps correct and teach
students. Not to mention if things
get a bit rough, it always helps to
have more hands!

We also talked to student Robin O.,

who told us he chose this class because he is very interested in the
martial arts, particularly Judo and
kickboxing. So naturally when he
found out that this new MMA class
included both Judo and kickboxing,
he was super stoked!
