What is a problem? There are many definitions that apply to different contexts. For our
context, of management, this definition of Merriam Websters dictionary is apt, thus, a
problem is something difficult to deal with; something that is a source of trouble. Other
definitions offered by the same dictionary are difficulty in understanding or accepting
something; feeling of not liking or wanting to do something and an intricate unsettled
question.
I define problem as an undesirable event raising its ugly head at an inconvenient
time. A problem is an unforeseen impediment to the progress of a human
endeavor.
When a problem crops up, the work flow stops or slows down; everyone concerned is
stressed out; harsh words are used; voices are raised and in short, the environment is not
harmonious any more.
But problems are common to every human endeavor. We cannot avoid problems. It is by
dealing with problems and resolving them, so much progress was achieved by the human
kind. Problems crop up in the management of the organizations too. Problems are the
springboards to launch us to the next level by making us better and more capable
individuals. Handling problems is the vehicle riding which we gain valuable experience.
Problems are the reason for us to invent better method and tools. We cannot imagine
progress and improvement without facing problems. In fact, it is better to view problems
as challenges.
