S5P1 Students will verify that an object is the sum of its parts.
a. Demonstrate that the mass of an object is equal to the sum of its parts by
manipulating and measuring different objects made of various parts.

Measuring Mass Lab

Mass is a measure of the amount of matter in an object. Mass is measured in grams (g) or
kilograms (kg). 1000g = 1kg

Read all directions twice.

Tell your teacher if you cant or are not permitted to chew gum!
Make a on the line when complete
This is a cooperative lab. Sharing and observing are equally
important. Dont commandeer the equipment. Be fair.
RE-BALANCE: To make sure your empty balance is balanced, manipulate the
large white button (on back) and the blue button on top. Re-balance again
before you measure the next lab. The white arrow should point straight down.

1.

In this lab, you will demonstrate that the mass of an object

is equal to the sum of its parts. Some parts are so small, you
cant see them!
Measuring the mass of gum whole and in parts.
_____Estimate the mass of your piece of Dubble Bubble: __________
_____Measure the mass of your piece of Dubble Bubble: __________
_____Chew your gum for 5 minutes (read and balance now!)
Dont forget
your UNITS!
_____Rewrap your gum with the original wrapper
_____Re-measure the mass of your piece of Dubble Bubble:
__________
_____Is the mass of the gum the same? Why or why not? Write to
explain thoroughly and use additional paper if necessary.

a. PART ONE - To calculate the percentage of parts that include the

gum base and wrapper in your piece of Dubble Bubble, divide the
number of grams in the chewed piece with wrapper by the total
grams in a new piece of gum.
