Ihadfiveroundsoftechnicalinterviewsandallwerecodingrounds.Ineachoftherounds,Iwasasked
twoquestions.Ihadtowritecompletecodeonpaperforonequestion.

Round1:
Givenasetofhorizontalandverticallinesegments(theirendpointsaregiven)findtheintersectionpoints.
IimmediatelygaveanO(n^2)solution.Heaskedmetooptimiseit.IsaidIfIhadtoprintallthen^2(worst
case)intersections,thereisnopointinoptimisingit.ThenIwasaskedtofindthenumberofintersections.
IgaveanO(nlogn)solutionandheaskedmetocodeit.IfoundthatmyalgorithmwaswrongwhenI
startedcodingit.IstartedthinkingagainandintheendIdidnotsolveit.

GivenasortedarrayprintallthepossibleBSTs(binarysearchtrees).Itoldhimtheapproachandhe
askedmehowIwouldimplementit.ThecodeactuallyisverycomplexandItoldhimhowIwoulddoit.He
askedmetocodeapartofitandIdid.

Overalltherounddidnotgowell.IhadnohopesthatIwouldgotonextround.Theinterviewergaveno
helpatallinthisround.

intotreetogetthesametreeasoutput.Iderivedaformulaforit(relatedtopermutations).Thenext
questionwastofindthenumberofinversionsinagivenarray.IgavehimanO(n^2)solutionandgavehim
threeapproaches(Segmenttree,BIT,Mergesortapproach)tosolvethequestioninO(nlogn).Hewasquite
satisfiedwiththethreeaproaches.

Thiswasadifficultround.Givenadictionaryofwordsandasentencetrimmedofspaces,Ihadtoadd
spacestoitandprintanypossiblesolution.Forexample,thecatsattheseatisinputandtheoutputcanbe
thecatsattheseatorthecatsattheseat.Wehavetoprintanyofthem.Igavehimanexponential
solutioninthebeginning.Hetoldmetooptimiseit.MeanwhileheaskedhowIwouldimplementa
dictionaryandaccessaword.IsaidanarrayandbinarysearchinthebeginningasIhadnothinginmind.
ThenIsaidwecanimplementaTRIE.Hesaidittakesupalotofspace.Ithoughtforawhileandsaid

graphtraversals.IwasgettingthesolutionbutIwasunabletovisualiseit.Allwereawasteandafter
sometimeIgotthesolution.Wecoulddoainordertraversalandgetanarray.Normallywewouldgeta
sortedarray.Butsincetwoofthemaremisplaced,Icanfindexactlytwoanomalieswhiletraversingthe

dictionaryorderisqqer,qqdf.Icansaythatdcomesaftere.Wecanformanedgefrometod.
Thenadirectedgraphwithnocycleswouldbeformed.Therewillbesomenodeswhichhaveanindegree
ofzero.Wecanstartindexingthemas1anddoaBFSstartingfromthemwithoutusingthevisarray.We

IwasprettyexhaustedbynowandIwasunabletowritecodeanyfurther.Iwasgivenastraightforward
dpquestionandIsolveditimmediately.Givenasetofnhousesarrangedoneaftertheotherasanarrayof
housesandgiventheamountcontainingineachhouse,findthemaximumamountofmoneyaburglarcan
stealwiththeconditionthattheburglarcannotstealinadjacenthouses.

ThenIwasaskedarealtimequestion.Arealtimestreamconstantlygivesthefollowingdata.Timestamp,
anidofanitemsold,quantitysold,priceofanitem.Ihadtotelltheitemwhichhadthelargestvolumeof

soonasIseeit.Icanreaditforonlyonemoment.Iwasunabletofindasolutionandhegavemeahintof
approximatingthetimeaccuracy.Ithengavehimasolutionandthediscussionwentonforsometime
aboutimplementationofthecodeandIwasaskedtowritethecodeforit.Iwrotethecodewithalotof
mistakesandheunderstoodthatIwasverytiredandaskedmetojustdebugthecodeandwearedone.

TherewasaHRroundfortwominutesorso.Itdoesntcountatall.

Suggestion:Alwaystalktotheinterviewerandlethimknowwhatyouarethinking.Thathelpsalot.Ifyou
