Todd Miller - Instituting the Georgia Tech Style Offense at the HS Level Why the Option 1. Option FB is unselfish (had 22 different kids score TDs this year) 2. Defense has to play disciplined football = Itis hard enough for people to be disciplined in life, let alone on the football field against the option. 3. Ball Control = Limit the amount of times that their opponent gets to handle the football. 4, Formation Friendly (helps them to find mismatches) 5. Good for smaller lineman = Lots of double teams, and lots of eutting ‘You can't get bored running this offense. If ISV is working then you need to continue to run [SV until they prove that they can stop it. Plays they Run Midline Inside Veer Outside Veer Sweep (Rocket Toss) Zone Reverse (Rocket Intercept) Pee er ‘Teaching the Option Uses the “Frames” to teach the tracks and the steps that the kids should be using: FB; follow the diagonal lines to keep your track on ISV (could arljust line for ML/OSV) WB: course must work through the FBs heels and stay in front of the bag. His motion must be full speed. He leaves on the “Sin Set. ‘QB: Works his steps on the “T” (don’t use a clock because itis too complicated for their kids) * Will also have another QB to the side they are running it to give the QB another ball to pitch with if he had a give read. ‘This way they are working all phases of the play in a more efficient manner. Splits OL ~ 3ft across the board WB - 9x1 (next year they are going to uy and move out to 4x1, to try and widen out the OLBs and help in the passing game) = ‘Their WBs are in WR sta es. They do this because the footwork for them is casier out of that stance, ‘The tradeoff is that they are not in a great position to block. Plays v. 40 front Plays v. 50 front so (run to shade) Iso Speed Option Speed Option Midline (ikes to use TE to set 3 tech) Midline (real good) ISV (use “crack” scheme) Veer (not a major play v. 50) OSV (only to TE side) OSV (good) Zone Zone (good) Rocket Toss (good) Miscellaneous ‘One thing they realy stress is the finishing of plays/runs = Their RBs are taught to always lower their shoulder and finish runs tough. = They also stress getting their OL. downfield to get extra blocks. “They start every practice with a 5m team take off period = Start from the 20yard play and run plays no huddle. = They stress everyone scoring and finishing runs. ‘© Had one clip of film where his tackle made a block 50 yards down field. ‘They tack knockdowns for their lineman. ‘This really drives home the idea of finishing plays, and also their importance of getting defenders on the ground. When he first got to this school they pre determined the give and the option portion of the plays. Still does this for their young kids until they get a better handle of the offense. Todd Miller - Midlinc Fundamentals Midline is the first play that they install = Itis the easiest for the QB to read because of how close itis ‘They always run this play to the 3 tech. ‘They QB will often be given the freedom to check the play at the LOS. + Ifthey ply is ever run to the 21 the guard will block man on and the play becomes an automatic pull. ‘They really focus on formationing the midline to get into the best look - One of their favorites is quads. Blocking Assignments M 8 FBs Aiming Point: But of the Center QB Techniques. T* Step is a 45" kick step with the backside foot (ML to the right, step with left Foot frst) = This step has to get depth, to get him away from the LOS ~The reason they like this step better than the traditional ML, steps is that it puts him ata better angle to go downhill if he gets a pull read. He is reading the color of the 3 technique for give/keep. = fin doubt give the football - They don’t tlk to them too much about exactly what they are going to read, they want the kids to be instinctive and react. Extend the football back to the fullback. Dry Read Drills: Coach QB Coach acts as the 3 technique to the QB and gives various reads. Really focus on their footwork. Lots of times they will have to verbalize their read to make sure they are seeing things correctly. ‘Aiming point is the butt of the center. Do not make a cut until you get to the heels of the DL. Read the block of the PSG on the LB. ‘They don’t like to read the block of the of the C against a 50 because it slows their FB down. He knows he is getting the ball when he feels the QBs back hand pull out of his stomach, At that point he clamps down. ‘They do not mind running this play against the “Bear” front. [tis actually something they feel very confident with. ‘This is a play they will play around a lot with motion, because itis a double option. ‘Wofford ML from Gun ‘They block the play exactly the same as if they were UC. ‘The back lines up right behind the guard on the ML and his course is still the butt of the center. ‘When the PSG veers for the LB he must chip the three technique to slow him down a little bit, Todd Miller - Rocket Sweep and Misdirection ‘This is a great play when teams really want to load up the box and stop your interior run game. Blocking the Play PSG/PSG: Reach step and run through the playside shoulder of any DL to your playside. ‘This has to be FAST. ~The PST has to understand his job is not to hook the DE. His goal is to run through his outside shoulder. A lot of times their tackle would screw this up. If the DE tries to fight outside the reach/hook will happen naturally. PS Wing: Rip inside arm past the OLB. Your goal is to make the OLB go underneath your, - This has been really good for them because they play almost always goes outside away from a mess. When they let him hand block it sometimes that guy would force it back inside. WR: Stalk CB wherever he goes. BS Wing: Motion must be as fast and flat as possible. He must catch this thing outside of dhe PST. = They will rain this path on the frames, similar to how they setit up for ISV QB: Throw itas far as possible. Rocket v, 4-3 “ends — In this scenario (Rocket to right) the PST must get outside the 5 tech and block the Sam. The PSW will work to the Safety. Counter Runs Ctr, Iso - Standard Cur. Iso that Navy/GT runs 9. “Base” - Runs this with rocket motion and it is a straight give to FB. Done when those LBs are running like crazy to the toss. FB runs standard ISV course. Counter Iso, ‘When they run this play they will have their slot that is going to get the ball deepen up as much as he needs too. = Showed Wofford running this and their slots were almost in a “Loose 'I” formation they were so deep and tight. ‘Wings first step is a flat step right at the centers butt. He has to keep his path flat. Have also used this to run their QB. He will fake the ISV to one direction then reverse ‘out and follow the WB into the hole. This is a great look against teams that are running a lot of man because no one accounts for QB. ‘Use of Motion ‘They really believe that using different sorts of motion and formations makes a lot of their standard running plays like misdirection plays. Example: Ran inside wing on his normal ISV motion to left and then ran ISV to the right. The other wing (adjuster) is told to get himself into pitch relationship. Same as their normal ASV but itis a different look. Todd Miller - Running the Inside and the Outside Veer Veer is their bread and butter Blocking Rules If veer to the left: 'T- Veer to LB = Ifthe DE tries to slant across his face the PST takes him. G/C - Combo T to LB. Guard makes a call to center to bring help to him. ‘The call is any word that starts with a “C” BSOL - Scoop (heavy on cutting) Tver to the right G/T - Combo T to MLB. Guard makes call to the tackle to bring help to him, The call is any word that starts with aT”, + ‘This cal is made on anything 2 technique to outside. ‘The Guard makes calls on all plays, regardless of play, which includes dummy calls (ic, rocket, etc) BSOL - Scoop. EB/QB Techniques on. FB - AP on ISV: Outside hip of the guard ‘The FB is told to stay on this highway regardless of if the guard’s hip moves at all. This is why the frame drill they do is so important. = Stance: Narrow, with very heavy hand. The coach should be able to kick his hand out from under him, and if he has enough weight he should fall. ‘Once he gets past the mess inside he is told to get to the hash, QB: Work 4/8 o clock (they don’t really talk a lot about clock work, they do all of their work ona“T”) ‘Teaching the Mesh: They start off putting the QB/FB in the mesh so they should get an idea of what it should feel like. - This is something that they practice all the time. It all starts in the off season. FB/QB Techniques on OSV FB - AP is Outside hip of the tackle, He really has to turn flat in order to get to this. QB - Open flat to the LOS and start running down the LOS to the mesh point. ‘They will only run OSV to a‘T/TE surface. 4 8B Fo8 Todd Miller - Practice Planning Principals 1 2. One thing that they always preach to thei ‘Always be prepared and know what you are doing, ~ Have a plan/purpose for everything, Do fundamentals everyday at practice = ie. DLwill do stance/start every single day - Everyone does the drill atthe same time, You get a lot mote reps that way. Win at everything you do. = Stress this idea in team, group, individual = Tryand make things as competitive as possible = Make sure that there are consequences for losing a drill © So they know how bad the feeling with losing is so they will do what they can to avoid it. Leadership is lonely - When you struggle people don’t want to be around you, = You have to believe in what you are doing and persevere Success can tum kids into something that is totally opposite in what you believe in. + When you start kicking butt on the field, kids have a tendency to take it alittle too far. Remember your responsiblity at home = Despite what happens on the football field you have a responsibility to your family. = You have to lead at home with your wife and kids. Stick to what you believe in, regardless of what happens. Fail and deal with the adversity that will allow you to regroup and change it. = Itis ok to let you kids see you fail because then they get a chance to see how you recover and deal with it. Sets a good example. is the idea of persistence, “Be in relentless pursuit of perfection” ~ team motto Offens rerfect your top 5 runs/passes for the week. = When kids are confident in those they will execute those plays well on game night. Defense: Be sound against all formations. = “A.good general never lets himself get outflanked) In practice you must always, always, stress tempo. ~ Evenin individual. On Thursdays they focus on all of the crazy situations that they could possibly sce in the course of a game. + take a safety, coming out, ete. 10m - Warmup (ynamic) ‘5m ~ TTO (tress everyone getting to the endzone, “everyone scores” ) 5m ~ Flex (neck stretches, jumping jacks, ete.) Defense 10m ~ Warmup (work stance/start, get off, footwork, etc.) 5m ~ Tackling progression 10m - Individual Skills by position (ie. DL. - work block recognition) 5m - Alignment 5m - Plays 10m - Team 5m - Special Teams (Punt and One other) Offense 5m ~ Individual (QBs ~ working footwork) 5m - Mesh Drill (Qs and FBs come together) 5m - Frame Drill ‘Sm - Shell Drill Game set up as skelly but works option, helps their perimeter blocking) ‘5m ~ Bubble Drill 10m - Perimeter 5m ~ Pass Under Pressure 10m = Team Offense ‘They script everything they are going to do and with the defense that they want to see. Game Planning ‘You have to know your opponent inside out. If you kids think that you do then they will think that they have an edge know one else has, Self scout yourself and break the tendencies that you have. Your kids have got to understand what you are trying to do, If they understand the game plan they have a beter chance of executing it ~ Brings all ofthe kids down during their lunch and watches film with them. - Really focuses on the QBs (gives them a shect to fill out, now they are watching film with a purpose, not just looking at it.) Does not bring in coaches on Sunday. They let their OC and their DC make up the gameplan and they will lk about it when the see each other on Monday. Believes that Sunday is a day for the family. Eric Reaburn - Wabash Zone Running Game Why ‘un the Inside Zone 1. Simple Assignments With the zone you down have to spend much time on the who. ‘This allows you to spend more time on the how (which is much more important). 2% Play can be run from every formation, and against every front. 3. Use deception to get defense moving Motion, etc. Allows you to play your best OL = There are not certain techniques that they G's have that the T's don't. Everyone does the same thing, so you can plug in your next best if someone goes down. 5. Everyone is at the point of attack, = Lets the back be an athlete and find the seam. ‘OL Fundamentals Leverage “Vertical - have a low COG (this makes your guys bend at the knees, not just hump over) * Horizontal - Hands must be inside the body (should never see elbows 2, Top of Shoulder Pad * They teach their OL to make contact with the top of the shoulder pads frst, then they bring the hands after that. 8. Drive the Backside Knee * The second step has to power through the defender. This should get your OL to power the defender up the field. 4, Eves on the Aiming Point * APis PS Number of the of the DL «They stress getting the eyes to the AP more than the footwork. If that is taken care of then the footwork will probably be ok. * If this is done right the helmet OL should be outside of the helmet of the DL. 5, First Step * Bucket: Get width and depth on the step. On this step you must also keep your pad level down and surge forward. They take this step when there is a wide defender. 6. Second Step * fumust get on the ground quickly, and gain some ground 7. Pwo Foot Splits. 8, Semi/Deep Alignment Techniques Covered: Any DIL that is head up to playside gap. Take a Bucket/Flat step depending on defenders width. Your step has to get your to the aiming point, Parially Covered DL on your BS Shoulder Bucket step with PS foot. Second step is vertical into the crotch of the defender. Flipper the DL with your eyes to the second level. Your job is to stand him up and turn is shoulders for your buddy. + “Wrong Stepping”: If the guy is a real stud and you are sure that you are not going to deal with a pinch then your could step with the near foot to the DL. ‘© The reason that they always step like this is because now the covered OL is in a better position to pick up a blitz or a pinch into his gap. © Iowa will do this (stepping with near foot) so long as the LB they are comboing too is not in the PS gap (otherwise he is in a really bad position). Also the technique outside of him must be really loose (s0 he isn'ta threat (o slan) Uncovered: No DL.on you anywhere = Always bucket step. Goal isto get your facemask into the armpit of the next OL over to the playside. © They refer to that as the “prison position” © Itshould create an overlap between the two OL (they don’t get hip to hip). Doing this it should allow the OL to overtake the DL: much casier. RBs Under Center ~ 7% yards deep Gun ~ 5% yards deep (straddling inside leg of the tackle) AP Inside leg of the PST He is responsible for moving the LBs To do this you must press your aiming point In the gun you must take bo steps after you get the hand off. Read 1* DL past Center (Bang, Bend, Bounce) + Slow To, Fast Through. QBs UC - Step at 5/7 = Sell naked (you have to do this 100 mph, and sell it with everything) ‘©. Sell it with the eyes, feet, hands (non hand should be against the stomach) Gun - Open to RB with eyes on the DE - Give: See Hs ~ Pull: Cant see them - When in doubt, give the football. = It should always look the same give/keep Notes from Film Handling 7 technique DE B cort ‘TE buckets with right foot and shoots the flipper to the ‘TE. He has to keep his playside arm free so he is in a better position to come off for the LB. © Hiis goal isto lift the DE and tum his shoulders to face the sideline. ‘This sets him up for the PST to take him over. PST: goal isto sill get facemask to his playside number of the DL. The step must allow him him to get to this number. Get undemeath your buddy and in the “prison position” Handling a “Fire Game” B aes In this scenario the B is coming off the edge and the E and T are both pinching. What has to happen is for it to become a 3 man zone. The PST takes the blitzing LB, the PSG takes, the pinching DE, and the C takes the pinching DT. Handling angle DT off When DT pinches the guard now goes from a two handed punch to a flipper (ust handles him as if he was already lined up on his inside shade). In essence he is delivering him to the center, He can’t ust leave him because you put the center in a horrible position to take him, He really focuses on driving the backside knee through the defender to get vertical movement on him and stick him. When you do this it allows you to stay with him when he tries to redirect and get a major finish him, Ifyou don't do this you will be over extended and in no position to do this. Shoulder to Hands Technique: ‘When he first got to Wabash the hands method was basically making them like “belly” blocking and they weren’t bringing any sort of power with their block. Because of this he has talked to them a lot about leading with the shoulder pads and then bringing the hands with them, He got this technique from the University of Towa (and the Colts use a similar technique). ‘The top of the shoulder pads should strike first and then as they strike you bring the firsts/hands into the block. If you do it correctly your hands should come in very tight to the block. A flipper could also come as well instead of a flip. Once you hit your aiming point you need to work to get your shoulder pads parrell to the goaline. “The Colts use a very similar technique but instead of bringing the hands bring a flipper with the backside hand (very similar (o the technique that is used by the University of Nevada). “The way he made it seem was that the “top of the shoulder pads” idea is really a means to an end, It shoulder ensure a lower pad level and create a better surge off of the line of scrimmage. UC OL to Backers: He can't be in a hurry to get (o line backers, because it just makes it that much longer that he has to block him before his RBs gets to that level. Adiustments to keep the IZ Ali 1, Backside WR runs Bubble. = Instead of having their slots try and come in and block an OLB they have him fake a bubble. This holdy/freezes the LB which removes the cutback defender. 2. Read Bubble. Instead of getting their WR into pitch relationship they have him bubble, which is much easier. If the QB gets a pull read he goes ahead and throws the bubble.. = This is really good for them because their QB was 6’6” and the MVP of their league, so they didn’t want him running it a ton and risk injury 3. Putting TE on the backside - _ This screws with the assignments on who has back or the QB or the pitch. 4, EB lead on the zone. = They tell them to take his steps and make his read just like he is the tailback. Basically, he is blocking the most dangerous man. They really like this because now you have some flexibility if the OL misses someone or if your back makes a poor cut. 5. Make OLB choose to defender the run or the pass. Ifhe plays wide, run the football. If he is playing tight, throw the bubble, 6. Run Playaction off the IZ If they fear this then the LBs and the Safties will not be as quick to fil. 7. Treat the Reverse like any other run play 8, Run the Outside Zone = Itis amore explosive play 9. Run the Counter = They block their Counter just like the old Ctr. Trey. = This is good because it catches the DE who is responsible for QB unaware. 10, Make give/pull look the same = Ifyou are the QB those two have to look identical because they can influence OLBs and the Safties Blocking the Outside Zone ‘They can do it two ways 1. Zone: Everyone bucket steps and works to the playside armpit of the defender 2. Scheme: If you don't think you can reach your defender you call your buddy to the playside down and pull around the edge. When pulling he talks about getting 244 yards of depth (“run the are”) = They tend to do this one a lot more, just because their kids like it, Backs AP ~ Butt of the TE (or imaginary TE) Efficiency 1" Down play: 4+ yards 2 Down play: Pick up '# the vards needed for a first down, 3° Down play: Pick up the 1* Down or score ~The IZ graded out at 58% efficient for them. They consider anything over 50 to be very good. It graded out at 65% in 2008 Joe Gilbert: Running the Power Play from the Gun with FS and BS Reads. Power Package 26-27: Power play with 1 back, Must run to a 6 man box (package it with a throw) WR Block standard Power Rules Block DE wherever he goes. 26-27 Flow: Power Play with a Frontside Read. ee v lock Standard Power Rules Step flat and try and circle the defense (get to the edge) BSG: Kick out the DE regardless of what he does. QB: Read the frontside just like you would on the Zone read. If he closes give the football to the back. If he comes upfield then run the power play just like the TB. (AP: Butt of the guard) WR: Block the I" LB in the box. 26-27 G: Boundry Run out of 2x2 < - Q FST/FSG (to the left): block down. C: Block back for guard BSG: Trap the DE to the left "TB: Shuflle step into the snap then follow the pulling guard. “This play gives the same look as “Flow” but is a predetermined give for the QB. Good when you want to give him a rest a litde bit. 24-25 Away: Similar to Flow, except now they read the BSDE * Away tells back to run away from the blocking scheme ‘OL: Block standard Ctr. Trey rules to the left "TB: Run flat course to the to the right. Goal is to circle the defense. QB: Read the DE for give/keep. IFhe squeezes give to TB. If he comes up field run your Power course. 46-47: Traditional Two Back Power O OL Techniques * Throughout his talk he also discussed some of the techniques that his OL uses on these schemes * Pulling Guard: Has to take the tightest path possible back into the LOS, If he gets there and the he sees color he just is told to blow up the whole thing. What this does is, ‘essentially create a double team on the DE and forces the LB to fit to the outside, Gap Double Team Post Man: Uses a “Crotch technique”. With that he takes a power step with his inside foor and powers his second step and his forearmn/flipper into the defenders midline, keeping his head outside of the block. Throughout the block he must keep his outside foot up and pounding through the defenders crotch, Drive Man: His goal is to attack the defenders hip from the side. Getting to the hip of the defender really creates movement on the down man. He takes is power step to the inside and executes a down block, basically. On the second step he throws his shoulder/flipper into the defenders hip. ‘The target area on this block is critical because that is what creates the movement. Center’s down block v. shade % With a shaded nose he tells the center to take his first step with his opposte foot. In this case his first step would be with his right foot. ‘The step is just an up and down step, he refers to it as a “settle step”, He does this because if he takes a normal down block step it puts him in a really weak position and really eliminates his ability to handle an angle across his face. Counter Trey Pullers: BSG: Pull into LOS. Do not allow him to log. He has to dig him out of there regardless of what he tries to do. If he does get wrong armed then the log will be natural. BST: First step is a bucket step, then he crosses over. This is critical because it gets him a litle bit deeper than the guard, which allows him to read the shoulders of the guard. Ron Aydelott - The Double TE Package in the Wing T Likes running a lot of his offense from the double tight package, because anytime you do it, you are automatically practicing your SY/GL offense. Even if you don’t have two good TEs you can use extra tackles or SEs because the defense still has to respect the fact that you have a body there. “Doubles” TE T GC GT TE Q w w F ‘This set balances up a defense. Itallows you to check plays to certain techniques very easy or away from certain players. FB: Toes at 4yds (in two point stance) On rocket he bumps up to 3.5 yds (they do this to get the back flatter on rocket). “Power” TE T GC G T TE Q HB F HB This is a good set to get into to feature your FB. ‘The problem with this set is that you don’t have a whole lot of threats with throwing the football. “Orange/Black” TE T G C G T TE Q Ron Aydelott - The Option Package in the Wing T Option Runs Midline: 70s = Only to the 3 tech ISV: 40s - Best to the I tech. Outside Veer: 40s “The first one they work on is the inside veer. That is a lot of what they do. ‘The QB is told “give unless” "The one change to that is against a 4I (the PST will block him). Ttis an auto disconnect and the play turns into a double option on the outside. ‘Teaching the mesh - They use the “ride method” = When the FB feels the pressure come off his ribs he clamps down, regardless of if he got the ball or not. = If the QB ever screws up on this (keeps when he should have given) he will just follow the FB up in the hole. Fullback Coaching Points: His Aiming Point is the outside leg of the guard. ‘You have to trust the decisions that he makes once he gets the football, let him be an athlete. During the course of the mesh his eyes must be up, so that he can read blocks and cut off of them accordingly. Wing Coaching Points ‘They have absolutely got to block their tails off for this to work. ‘Most of the time they will either seal a LB or work to the safety (similar to the AF rules against a 7man front and an 8man.) Motion must go at full speed, but at the snap they need to get themselves into pitch, relationship with the QB (5x2) Outside Veer To run this play the footwork is exactly like inside veer for the QB/FB. Their OL tighten their splits down to 1 foot on the playside. ‘This makes it a really cheap add for them. Loves to run this play with double TEs or against 50/30 fronts. ‘The FBs major rule for this is to get his butt outside of the double team, To do this he may have to jump cut after he gets the football or slide to the outside after the handoff. ‘The normally run this play strong but have run it weak before. To do this they make a “BAT? call, where the wing and the tackle double the DE. ‘They only do this ifthey have a very tough and a very smart wing. S f ‘The goal with ML is to get the QB running the football = Change the thought process to “keep unless” FBs AP = Butt of the center QB has to get depth away from the LOS on his initial footwork. ‘They will run this play against a 0 NG. On this they tell their center they need movement somewhere. The FB just reads the center’s block and adjusts accordingly. Any time they get a shade or a 2 on the backside they will fold the backside guard around to the LB, Their OL coach is a big fan of getting angles. “Tackles Turnout block: steps with his inside foot first and from there itis a basic drive lock on the defender. Has to go inside foot first to maintain gap integrity. Miscellaneous 80 Series 1) XB 2) Down 8) Bunch Pass + They protect this by doing a reach / reach and cup protection 4) Sally (Hard Sally or Soft Sally) 5) Counter Trap Practice Ideas: = Practices every day by series they run, This helps them to to focus on the things they are doing in better detail, and doesn’t overload the kids. Monday ~ 20 series (Buck, Trap, Jet, Rocket, Waggle, Counters, etc.) ‘Tuesday - Option (ML/ISV/OSV, All Belly plays) ‘Wednesday - Power Series/Belly Series ‘Typically has 1 hour for offense, 1 hour for defense, 30m for special type stuff. Has run jet without pulling the playside guard. They did that in 2003 when they won the State Title. ‘The reason they pull him now is because it gives the play an out if the man their wing is blocking plays inside out and forces the play back inside. ‘Their OL shoulder blocks, but their OL coach lets his guys uses hands at times afier he teaches this the normal shoulder stuf, because they are about 280 across the board. ‘When working OL techniques every person does everything at once. This gets kids many more reps than usta.
