Specific Objective: 80% of students will be able to accurately give the syllables in
each word 80% of the time when prompted.

Concomitant Objective: Students will practice syllables while being physically


active in a classroom setting.

Transition: Students will be in their seats while watching


the presentation on syllables.
Please stay in your seats for now as we do a quick
review of syllables.

Set Induction: Okay, so today we are going to review


what a syllable is, and practice the syllables in words
using different activities

Learnable Piece: We are going to practice syllables in


words by doing different activities around the room. For
each activity, you will be doing something to mark each
syllable in each word given to you to help you hear
where each syllable is and physically represent it.

Materials

Presentation of New Material/Directions: The students


minutes will be presented with a powerpoint that goes over the
definition of a syllable, and will also practice a couple of
words with the teacher.
Who can raise their hand and tell me what a syllable
is? Definition of a syllable: an uninterrupted segment of
speech consisting of a vowel sound, a diphthong, or a
syllabic consonant, with or without preceding or following
consonant sounds.
Lets try going over the word animal and clap out the
syllables as we hear it an(clap)i(clap)mal(clap). How
many syllables are in that word?

Transition: Now we are going to get into groups of 3 (4


groups of 3). Please count off by 4s when I point to you.
There are stations around the room. Once, you know
youre number, you are going to go to your station (ex.
Group 1 goes to station 1, Group 2 goes to station 2,
etc).

Activity: For this activity, you are going to go to each station. At


each station there is a task sheet, and equipment for you to use. For
example, at station 1. (give example of station 1). You are going to
work as a group to complete the task. You will have 1 minute to
complete each task sheet at each station. I will signal to you when it
is time to switch. Do your best and work as a group to decide how
many syllables are in each word.

Task 1(Station 1):


Count out the syllables for the following words. For each syllable,
dribble the basketball one time. Each group member will have a
basketball, and will say the words together as a group while
dribbling the ball for each syllable.

Task 2 (Station 2):


Count out the syllables for the following words. For each syllable,
pass the bean bag to your partner(s). Each group member will be
standing in a circle, or facing the other partners, and will the say the
words together while passing to the next person for each syllable.
1.Strawberry 2.Banana
3. Watermelon 4. Orange

Task 3 (Station 3):


Count out the syllables for the following words. For each syllable, do
one jumping jack. Each group member will say the words together
as a group while completing each jumping jack for each syllable.
1.Elephant 2.Monkey
3.Alligator 4.Giraffe

Task 4 (Station 4):


Count out the syllables for the following words. For each syllable,
toss the frisbee to to your partner(s). Each group member will be
standing in a circle, or facing the other partners, and will say the
words together while passing to the next person for each syllable.

1.Hamburger 2.Hotdog

Possible Modifications: Cut down on time if students


are going quickly. Can also stop for clarifications or to
model.
