Fitting condition of the center link pall joints 2. Looseness of the idler arm bushes 3, Looseness of the wheel bearing 4. Backlash betwen the sector shaft anid ball nut STEERING GEAR REMOVING STEERING GEAR 4. Disconnect the battery negative cable 2. Remove the horn cap and steering whee! Cautions a) Before removing the steering wheel, apply identification marks on the steering column shaft and steering whee! b)Do not strike the steering column shaft end with a hammer. Striking shaft will damage the bearing or collapsible shaft. ©) Use suitable puller to remove the steering wheel. 3. Remaw the steering column covers, 4, Flemove the air duct and disconnect the couplers of. the combination switch, 5, Remove the rombination switch assembly. 6. Remave the steering lock assembly referring to Page 108-14. Femove the colurin jacket fixing bracket, 10a, 10A srecana cear “TUTOR O08 wa-6 8, Mark the bonnet hinge lecations on the bonnet ‘nd remove the bonnet 8, Faise the front end of the vehicle and support it with stands, 10. Disconnect the center link from the pitta arm ‘with puller (49 03 18 850C). 11. Remove the pitman arm from sector shalt with puller (49 0223 6956) 12, Remave the steering gear housing attaching bolts ‘and remove the steering gear housing assembly through the engine compartment, Caution Mf the car has been in a collision, check the steering wheel for axial play before removing the steering gear assombly. If the steering column shatt is crushed or axial play occurs, replace the steering gear and column shaft as an assembly. DISASSEMBLING STEERING GEAR 1 Drain the lubncan Hold the steering gear housing with a viee or an yngine stand (49 0107 680A and 49 0221 ODBA). Slide the column jacket off the column shaft. Loosen the adjusting cover lock nut, Remove the side cover attaching bolts 6. Remow the sector shaft assembly from the gear housing by tapping the sectar shall assembly with a plastic hammer, Caution Be careful not to damage the shaft. steers cear 10A “aAITORD 8, Unscrew the end cover lock nut with the suitable saronch, 9, Loosen the end cover. 10, Remove the worm shaft and ball nut assembly, Do not disassemble the worm shaft and ball nut assembly. 11, Hemove the oil seal with suitable tool, Do not remove the oil seal unless il is necessary. INSPECTING STEERING GEAR 1. Check the operation of the ball nut assembly on. the worm shaft, If the ball nut does not travel smoothly and freely on the worm shaft and there 's roughness, replace the steering gear assembly. 2. Check the worm bearings and cups for wear or any damage, If defective, repiace the steering gear csgerbly. 3. Check the interrupted rotation and the abnormal noise of tapered roller baring, Caution Twirl the bearing toward the thrust direction and check for any interrupted rotation (catching) and the abnormal sound. If any of above conditions is found, replace the sactor shaft assembly. 4, Check the oil seal for wear, flaw or any damage If there is any possibility of il leakage, replace the oil seal Caution When installing, do not tap the oil seal directly ‘hammer. 10a. 7 0A steenivs cear STIR OTE aaron ~5 1oA-8 ASSEMBLING STEERING GEAR 1, Install the oil seal with suitable too! (if removed), When installing, do not tap the oil seal directly with a hammer. 2. Install the worin shaft atid ball wut assembly into the gear housing, 3. Screw in the end caver until the preload of the ‘wort shalt bacornes 0.2 ~ 0.5 kg (0.44 ~ 1.1 Ib). To measure the preload, attach the attachment (49.0180 9108) to the edlumn shaft end and pull the spring scale squarely and then, take a reading (of tho sealo when the shaft starts 10 tur 4, Alter adjusting the preload, tighten the end cover tock nut with suitable wrench and recheck the preload, 5. Trun the worm shaft and place the rack in the center position of the worm, 6 Install the sector shatt assembly into the gear housing, being careful not to damage the oil seal Make sure the canter of the spetor goar is in ‘alignment with the canter of the worm shatt rack 7. Aoply sealing agent 10 side caver and place the side cover onto the sector shait assembly, then turn the sector shaft assembly counter-clockwise lunti itis serewed into proper position &. Tighten the side cover attaching bolts. Tightening torque: 45 ~ 55 N-m (33 ~ 40 fttb) ©. Temporarily tighten the adjusting cover lack nu,
