Brittany Danelon, a grade 11 student at Belle River District High School, has been awarded a position on the
Ontario Minister of Education’s student advisory council. Of the 60 students on this provincial council,
Danelon is the only secondary student from the Windsor - Essex County region. She is well suited for the
position, as the active Student Parliament Prime Minister of BRDHS.

On May 12, the inaugural meeting for the Student Advisory Council was held in Toronto. There, students
participated in open table discussions with each other and had the opportunity to dialogue directly with the
Minister of Education. A primary goal of this council is to provide a “Student Voice” that can help improve
various aspects of our educational system. There are 9 areas the group is to focus on: activities outside the
classroom, learning life skills, offering a socially inclusive environment, having an academically inclusive
environment, empowering students to speak their mind, allowing students to give feedback on learning
experiences, keeping students informed, giving students a high-quality education, and encouraging eco-
friendly practices. Meetings will be held over the next year, beginning with a leadership training experience in
Orillia in August.
