"c#c Amistad Community Health Center announced today the award of a $10,000 grant
from the Coastal Bend Diabetes Initiative to create a community garden. The garden will be built in
partnership with Mission 911, a local homeless shelter, and other community partners and will be located
behind the Amistad Community Health Center Building at 1533 S. Brownlee Blvd. Corpus Christi, TX 78404.

The Amistad Community Health Center Healthy Eating Community Garden Project addresses diabetes in the
Coastal Bend by providing educational and exercise opportunities to patients with or at-risk for diabetes. The
purpose of this project is to enable diabetic patients, and patients who are at risk for diabetes, to grow
vegetables, fruits, and herbs, and to learn ways to prepare healthy meals with those foods, while simultaneously
providing a means for exercise, social opportunity and community pride. The garden will also be used for monthly
nutrition education sessions with pediatric patients who are at-risk for developing diabetes later in life.

´At Amistad, we believe strongly in prevention and supporting our patients to make healthy lifestyle
changes,µ said Amistad CEO Eddy Herrera. ´With the grant from the Coastal Bend Diabetes Initiative we
will be able to help our diabetic patients improve their health through gardening and healthy eating, and
we will educate children in a hands-on, engaging manner to teach them about making healthy choices.
Community gardening is a cutting-edge approach to addressing diabetes, and Amistad is excited to
provide this opportunity to our patients and the community through the support of the Coastal Bend
Diabetes Initiative.µ

Amistad Community Health Center is a faith-based, non-profit, Federally Qualified Health Center. The
center offers an affordable primary care and pediatric program that includes medical services provided
on sliding-fee-scale based on family size and income, prescription assistance, and a Medicaid application
office on-site.
