Abstract
In the context of the rapidly growing Indian economy and the expected shortfall of
trained or skilled people in the textile industry, initiatives for skill development
have gained importance from the national point of view. Moreover, only limited
resources may be available for educational purposes. Hence, there is considerable
interest in the skill up-gradation of people, especially at vocational level, where a
large number of workers are required, but also at the supervisory and middle
levels. This paper focuses on the area of skill up-gradation of learners in textile
designing without restrictions in eligibility requirements (such as matriculation or
graduation), through the distance mode of education by preparation and use of
video-based instructional materials. It appears that a paradigm shift away from
traditional blackboard-and-chalk classrooms is on the horizon owing to the
combination of two factors, that is, a resource crunch on the one hand and the
most amazing development of audio-visual technologies that are capable of
providing a rich learning experience through multi-media presentation on the
other. The presentation includes a brief display of video-film through DVD,
demonstrating the impact of multi-media learning strategies in the context of
learning textile designing through distance education mode.

Keywords: Skill up-gradation, vocational education, textile designing,
