Office 2007, Unattended Setup & Fine-tuning its very easy &
simple! Rate Topic:

Post ed 1 4 A pr il 2 0 0 6 - 1 0 :2 2 A M

(updated to reflect final RTM v ersion)

Unattending or silently installing MS Office Sy stem, has now become easier than ev er. There are two way s
to unattend y our setup:
--> Option A (use it only if y ou got Office2007 thru SoftwareA ssurance, which comes with activ ation
stripped out).
--> Option B is for all the others (retail/OEM/academic/trial/etc). Both are colored differently below.

Option A :
1 . Ensure y ou hav e an actual V LK (some call it enterprise/corporate) disc & product-key .
2. Notably , o2k7 uses setup patches (*.MSP) for uA , rather than transforms which prev ious v ersions used
(*.MST). The below instructions will giv e y ou an MSP file, which is not accepted by non-corporate v ersions
of o2k7 . If y ou ignored point1 abov e, then y ou will end up wasting 1 5 minutes of y our life which I'm not
responsible for.
3. Now at the command prompt, ty pe: setup.ex e /adm in

http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/723… 1/11
5/27/2010 Office 2007,
3. Now at the command prompt, ty pe: setup.ex Unattended
e /adm in Setup & Fine…
4. Choose the product for which y ou want to make a customization-patch.
5. Then go through all steps in the customization wizard (to install the reqd apps & remov e junk & change
default settings).
6. Be sure to hav e "completion notice" turned on & "suppress modals" turned off (this is to get to see errors,
if any ex ist). Once y ou're done with testing, go thru the customization again to modify the MSP to disable
completion notice & enable suppress modals.
7 . Sav e the resulting patch file in the same folder as o2k7 setup files.
8. Now just ex ecute this command (thru any method) for silent install: setup.ex e /adm infile
CUST OM.MSP
Or if y ou hav e the Office 2007 Enterprise VLK, y ou could ev en drop the CUSTOM.MSP file in the "Updates"
folder & setup will pick it up automatically (without any switches being used). For this, ensure y ou hav e
WindowsInstaller 3.1 already installed. Y ou can add in further MSP files (ex tracted from SP1 update EXE) as
well, to hav e updates applied during install.

*** For completely silent install, y ou MUST set the Display Lev el to "none", either by MSP (accessible from
step 6 abov e) or by x ml, otherwise y ou'll get a confirmation dialog similar to the image shown in
attachment below. (do this only A FTER testing, when y ou're sure it works)

Option B:
1 . Go to the folder-path, "Office2007 \Pro.WW" (or any ??????.WW folder for other editions such as
standard/enterprise/etc)
2. Modify "config.x ml", or copy it to somewhere else & modify it, using my posted code below as a sample.
3. If y ou modified it "in location", then setup will take up the changes automatically .
4. Otherwise, place the modified file in the same folder of setup.ex e, as custom-uA .XML
5. This is the command to run setup with the customizations specified in custom-uA.XML: setup.ex e
/config custom -uA.XML

7 . This method is also a great way to make changes to the defaults itself, so that y ou dont need to keep
changing it upon ev ery new time y ou install it. The sample XML here, makes setup fully silent, cuts down
features rarely used by me, and reduces install footprint of Office 2007 Professional from 7 21 MB, to 303
MB (of course y ou can alway s add/remov e components later); I'v e also remov ed lines that I found useless
from it, y ou might like to keep many of the default lines & customize them. A lso, be aware that the XML
offers a way to chain updates & install them before or after o2k7 setup, but then y ou'll lose control ov er
reboot parameters. By default, o2k7 setup wont cause an auto-reboot, so no need of "/noreboot" or
"Reboot=Really Suppress" properties. I intend this XML to be used for clean installs, with no prev ious
v ersion settings or profiles to be migrated. Use "start /wait" for silent installs. This file is for the main suite,
y ou can modify it accordingly for the other component products, the options are commented with double-
slashes. I obtained the OptionIds from setup.x ml files, in each component folder.

Here's a tested/working config.x ml file, to get y ou started with Option B:

(y ou need to put in y our own key , and configuration-Product can be obtained from y our current x ml)

The procedure is same for all other editions of Office 2007 . The abov e is just a working sample, y ou'd need
to put in an appropriate key & modify as per y our needs.

If y ou downloaded a single SETUP.EXE (500-MB?) from MSDN, then y ou might need to ex tract it to some
folder, to get the installation source.
setup.ex e /ex tract:D:\o2k7

My only beef with this v ersion (atleast in the current beta), is that there doesn't seem to be any way to
disable creation of the LIS.
(LIS = local installation source, its the s*** that y ou see in the name of an "MSOcache" folder littering any of
y our HDD partitions at random).

If the LIS was disabled by default, the installation time could be reduced by 3 minutes approx , besides
sav ing HDD space (because the last 3 minutes consists of copy ing files from CD to the LIS).

Here's what I'v e already tried in the config.x ml, but both failed:

<LIS CA CHEACTION="REMOV ECA CHEONLY " />

<CDCA CHE V alue="0" />

In both cases, setup refuses to use the XML.

Y es, I know that we could write a batch file to search all driv es for the "MSOcache" folder & delete it if found,
but it would be ev en better to disable LIS, in the first place. Does any body know how to do this in o2k7 ?

Hi Robert,
I believ e what y ou want to do, is to hav e access to all dialogs, y ou basically want to just customize the setup
defaults & go ahead normally from there on.

Here's how:
Go to the 2nd line in my ex ample abov e. Y ou see "Display Lev el="none"". Change it back to "full" instead of
"none". That is all.

@clav icle
Thanks indeed. I just wish someone finds out how to disable the "MSOcache" facility in o2k7 .....

Hi there,

after I found out, that I just hav e to ex ecute my OPPLUS-DE.EXE and grab the contents after unpacking
from my temp dir befor cancelling the installation, I was able to alter the config.x ml file the way y ou
suggested. ;-)

Howev er, I still get a dialog window asking whether to install or to alter settings. Ev en with Display Lev el =
"none". When I click install, the whole process takes place unattended as ex pected. When choosing to alter
settings I see, that my changes in the config.x ml are working.

A ny ideas why I still get this dialog?

Chris.

Hi!

I hav e the same problem. The config.x ml is obv iously being used but I get the same dialog window.

By the way ... is there a way to tell Office in the config.x ml to install A LL components, not just the default
ones ?

Thanks,

I didn't find an option that automatically selects all av ailable features.

Regarding the Dialog Window:

I managed to create a script that can be integrated into an unattended setup to automatically click the
button. The only problem is, that if y ou deploy Office 2007 with SMS 2003 for instance, the script won't
work, since the gui will not be v isible to the user. A nd this is basically my problem,... I can't get it to work
with SMS 2003.

Howev er, here is the script:

Dim objWSHShell, objEx ec

Set objWSHShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")

On Error Resume Nex t

' Wait for Uninstall

' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Set objEx ec = objWSHShell.Ex ec("setup.ex e")
WScript.Sleep 500

' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
waitForWindow "Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007 (Beta)"
objWSHShell.SendKey s "{ENTER}" ' <install>
WScript.Sleep 500

' Wait for the setup to finish

Do While objEx ec.Status = 0
WScript.Sleep 500
Loop

http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/723… 6/11
5/27/2010 Office 2007, Unattended Setup & Fine…
' Quit this script
WScript.Quit

' Waits until the window appears or quits after 30 seconds

SUB waitForWindow( Title )
i=0
DO
bA ctiv e = objWSHShell.A ppA ctiv ate( Title )
WScript.Sleep 1 000
i=i+1
LOOP UNTIL bA ctiv e = TRUE OR i > 30
WScript.Sleep 1 00

ScriptPath = FileSy sObj.GetFile(WScript.ScriptFullName).ParentFolder

in some other script but they do not work in y our script (and I am not good at v bs scripting at all)
MA y be something else is wrong too because the same thing happens if I double click on the v bs ...

Set FileSy sObj = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSy stemObject")
ScriptPath = FileSy sObj.GetFile(WScript.ScriptFullName).ParentFolder

WshShell.Run Cmd

Call Main()

WScript.quit()

Sub Main()
Connect2Window iLoopTimeWait, "Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007 (Beta)"
WshShell.SendKey s ("{ENTER}")
End Sub

V ery ex cellant post prathapml,

http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/723… 8/11
5/27/2010 Office 2007, Unattended Setup & Fine…
I recently installed Office 2007 on my machine and noticed that MSOCache folder is being created under
my %HOMEDRIV E%. I went through ORK 2007 documentation and it suggestes that that location should be
%PFiles%\Microsoft Office\Office 1 2\MSOCache.

prathapml, can I specify the LIS Location in config.x ml in a such way , whenev er setup will start cache it will
cache only under dir mentioned in config.x ml.

The config.x ml file y ou hav e prov ided is v ery useful. Howev er, I tried sev eral way s to prev ent A ccess and
V isio installation using config.x ml. Though I successed the same using .MSP I would like to do the same
using config.x ml. Can y ou please giv e me some tips on this?
Thanks a lot.

@midiboy :
No need of V Bscripts, just use this command-line for fully silent install:

setup.ex e /config pro.x ml

Y ou shud ex ecute this from y our SMS scripts or thru unattended batch-files. Note that modify ing the
original config.x ml is sub-optimal, it'd be better to specify path to a *.XML file that y ou'v e created!

A nd to others, well, LIS configuration eludes me as of now.

has any one found a way to integrate the Technical refresh into the Office 2007 installation base ? If the TR
