TRAINING PROGRAM FOR NEW STAFF NURSES


(INTENSIVE CARE UNIT)

DAY ACTIVITIES TRAINOR


1st 1. Introduces to the unit staff. Head Nurse/ Senior
2. Orients and familiarize to the following. Staff Nurse
a. Physical set up of the unit.
• Patient’s cubicle.
• Nurses Station.
• Equipment area.
• Supplies and Stocks area.
• Utility Room.
• Pantry/Locker room.
• Visitors lounge.
b. Patients Chart (different forms found
In the chart).
• Standard Chart arrangement for
admitted patient.
• Standard Chart arrangement for
discharge patient.
• Proper filling out of forms.
3. Discuss the unit policies and Procedures:
a. Admitting patients from other area
(e.g. E.R., ORC, OGC, Inpatient units
and from other Hospital).
b. Discharging/DAMA patients.
c. Transferring patients to Inpatients and
other Hospital.
4. Discuss process on carrying out the following
Doctors order.
a. Medication order.
b. Requisition and booking of
laboratory and diagnostic
procedures.
c. Requisition of medicines and
supplies.
d. Referral of patient to other
consultant.
5. Orients to the Hospital Information System.
6. Orients different types of equipment seen in
The unit, their usage and preparation.
7. Discuss endorsement process.

2nd 1. Trainee observes the Senior Nurse doing the


following task;
a. General Endorsement.
b. Bedside to bedside endorsement.
c. Nursing procedures such as:
• Vital signs taking.
• Neuro vital signs taking.
• Doing Head to toe
assessment.
• Checking and calibration
of patients IV fluids.
• Assisting, positioning and
turning of patients and
doing the back clapping.
• Suctioning of patient.
• Obtaining capillary blood
glucose.
• Checking of placement and
patency of NGT and
indwelling catheter.
• Administration of
medication (oral,
parenteral, topical,
ointments, drops, etc).
• Checking of post-operative
dressing.
d. Carry out Doctors order.
e. Admits and discharge patient.
f. Refer pertinent changes in patient’s
condition.
g. Accompany doctor during rounds.
h. Checks Emergency kart.
3rd 1. Trainee performs the following task with Head nurse/ Senior
the buddy senior staff nurse. staff nurse
a. Attends to general endorsement.
b. Given patient assignment (1 patient) with
senior buddy staff.
c. Attends to bedside to bedside
endorsement.
d. Performs nursing procedures such as:
• Vital signs taking.
• Neuro vital signs taking.
• Doing Head to toe assessment.
• Checking and calibration of patients
IV fluids.
• Assisting, positioning and turning of
patients and doing the back
clapping.
• Suctioning of patients.
• Obtaining capillary glucose.
• Checking of placement and patency
of NGT and indwelling catheter
• Administration of medication (oral,
parenteral, topical, ointments, drops,
etc.)
• Checking of post operative dressing.
e. Carries out doctor’s order.
f. Admits and discharge patient.
h. Refers pertinent changes in patient’s

4-5th day Trainee performs the same task as of day 3 with Head Nurse/ Senior

8-12th Trainee performs the same task as of day 5 with Head Nurse/ Senior

b. Receives and endorses patients properly.
c. Doing Head to toe assessment.
d. Proper vital signs taking including neuro
vital signs.
e. Proper documentation of patient’s activities
and untoward observations during the shift.
f. Admits and discharges patient.
g. Carries out doctor’s order.
h. Follow-ups laboratory and diagnostic
procedures to be done.

• Trainee will be evaluated after 2nd month of exposure to the area and after
the 6th month of probationary period utilizing the Employee Performance
Appraisal Form (EPAF).
