Chapter 31

Of the Laying On Of Hands

1. We believe that laying on of hands, with prayer, upon baptised believers, as

such, is an ordinance of Christ,

Hebrews For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again
5:12 which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need
of milk, and not of strong meat.

Hebrews Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection;
6:1 not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward
God,
Hebrews Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead,
6:2 and of eternal judgment.

Acts Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.
8:17
Acts And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was
8:18 given, he offered them money,
Acts Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the
8:19 Holy Ghost.

Acts And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they
19:6 spake with tongues, and prophesied.

and ought to be submitted unto by all such persons that are admitted to partake of
the Lord's Supper, and that the end of this ordinance is not for the extraordinary gifts
of the Spirit, but for a farther reception of the Holy Spirit of promise,

Ephesians In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your
1:13 salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of
promise,
Ephesians Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased
1:14 possession, unto the praise of his glory.
or for the addition of the graces of the Spirit, and the influences thereof; to confirm,
strengthen, and comfort them in Christ Jesus, it being ratified and established by the
extraordinary gifts of the Spirit in the primitive times,

Acts And he departed thence, and entered into a certain man's house, named Justus, one that
18:7 worshipped God, whose house joined hard to the synagogue.

Acts And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they
19:6 spake with tongues, and prophesied.

to abide in the church as meeting together on the first day of the week was,

Acts 2:1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one
place.

that being the day of worship, or christian sabbath, under the Gospel, and as
preaching the word was,

Acts 10:44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the
word.

and as baptism was,

Matthew And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the
3:16 heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove,
and lighting upon him:
Matthew And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well
3:17 pleased.
and prayer was,

Acts And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and
4:31 they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.

and singing psalms, etc. was,

Acts And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners
16:25 heard them.
Acts And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were
16:26 shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed.

so this laying on of hands was,

Acts 8
Acts And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution
8:1 against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout
the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles.
Acts And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him.
8:2
Acts As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and
8:3 women committed them to prison.
Acts Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.
8:4
Acts Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them.
8:5
Acts And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing
8:6 and seeing the miracles which he did.
Acts For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with
8:7 them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed.
Acts And there was great joy in that city.
8:8
Acts But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery,
8:9 and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:
Acts To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great
8:10 power of God.
Acts And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with
8:11 sorceries.
Acts But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and
8:12 the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.
Acts Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip,
8:13 and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.
Acts Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word
8:14 of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
Acts Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy
8:15 Ghost:
Acts (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the
8:16 Lord Jesus.)
Acts Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.
8:17
Acts And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was
8:18 given, he offered them money,
Acts Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy
8:19 Ghost.
Acts But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the
8:20 gift of God may be purchased with money.
Acts Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.
8:21
Acts Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart
8:22 may be forgiven thee.
Acts For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity.
8:23
Acts Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which
8:24 ye have spoken come upon me.
Acts And they, when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to
8:25 Jerusalem, and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans.
Acts And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto
8:26 the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.
Acts And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under
8:27 Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to
Jerusalem for to worship,
Acts Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.
8:28
Acts Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.
8:29
Acts And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said,
8:30 Understandest thou what thou readest?
Acts And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he
8:31 would come up and sit with him.
Acts The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter;
8:32 and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:
Acts In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for
8:33 his life is taken from the earth.
Acts And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this?
8:34 of himself, or of some other man?
Acts Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him
8:35 Jesus.
Acts And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See,
8:36 here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?
Acts And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and
8:37 said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
Acts And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both
8:38 Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.
Acts And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip,
8:39 that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.
Acts But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he
8:40 came to Caesarea.

Acts 19
Acts And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the
19:1 upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,
Acts He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said
19:2 unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
Acts And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's
19:3 baptism.
Acts Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the
19:4 people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ
Jesus.
Acts When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
19:5
Acts And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they
19:6 spake with tongues, and prophesied.
Acts And all the men were about twelve.
19:7
Acts And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing
19:8 and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.
Acts But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the
19:9 multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the
school of one Tyrannus.
Acts And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard
19:10 the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.
Acts And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:
19:11
Acts So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases
19:12 departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.
Acts Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had
19:13 evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul
preacheth.
Acts And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so.
19:14
Acts And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?
19:15
Acts And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and
19:16 prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
Acts And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on
19:17 them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.
Acts And many that believed came, and confessed, and showed their deeds.
19:18
Acts Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them
19:19 before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of
silver.
Acts So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.
19:20
Acts After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through
19:21 Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see
Rome.
Acts So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timotheus and Erastus;
19:22 but he himself stayed in Asia for a season.
Acts And the same time there arose no small stir about that way.
19:23
Acts For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana,
19:24 brought no small gain unto the craftsmen;
Acts Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know
19:25 that by this craft we have our wealth.
Acts Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this
19:26 Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are
made with hands:
Acts So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of
19:27 the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed,
whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.
Acts And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is
19:28 Diana of the Ephesians.
Ac And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus,
19:29 men of Macedonia, Paul's companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the
theatre.
Acts And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.
19:30
Acts And certain of the chief of Asia, which were his friends, sent unto him, desiring him that
19:31 he would not adventure himself into the theatre.
Acts Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused; and the
19:32 more part knew not wherefore they were come together.
Acts And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And
19:33 Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made his defence unto the people.
Acts But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours
19:34 cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.
Acts And when the townclerk had appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man
19:35 is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great
goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?
Acts Seeing then that these things cannot be spoken against, ye ought to be quiet, and to do
19:36 nothing rashly.
Acts For ye have brought hither these men, which are neither robbers of churches, nor yet
19:37 blasphemers of your goddess.
Acts Wherefore if Demetrius, and the craftsmen which are with him, have a matter against any
19:38 man, the law is open, and there are deputies: let them implead one another.
Acts But if ye inquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful
19:39 assembly.
Acts For we are in danger to be called in question for this day's uproar, there being no cause
19:40 whereby we may give an account of this concourse.
Acts And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.
19:41

for as the whole Gospel was confirmed by signs and wonders, and divers miracles
and gifts of the Holy Ghost in general,

Hebrews For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and
2:2 disobedience received a just recompense of reward;
Hebrews How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be
2:3 spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;
Hebrews God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles,
2:4 and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?

so was every ordinance in like manner confirmed in particular.
