INTRODUCTION:

“We are responsible for what we are, and whatever we wish ourselves to be, we have the
power to make ourselves. If what we are now has been the result of our own past
actions, it certainly follows that whatever we wish to be in future can be produced
by our present actions; so we have to know how to act.”

- Swami Vivekananda

Throughout the twentieth century, India has been in the midst of a demographic
transition. At the beginning of the century, endemic disease, periodic
epidemics, and famines kept the death rate high enough to balance out the
high birth rate. Between 1911and 1920, the birth and death rates were
virtually equal--about forty-eight births and forty-eight deaths per 1,000
population. The increasing impact of curative and preventive medicine
(especially mass inoculations) brought a steady decline in the death rate. By
themid-1990s, the estimated birth rate had fallen to twenty-eight per 1,000,
and the estimated death rate had fallen to ten per 1,000. Clearly, the future
configuration of India's population (indeed the future of India itself) depends
on what happens to the birthrate . Even the most optimistic projections do
not suggest that the birth rate could drop below twenty per 1,000 before the
year 2020.

PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT:

India is facing intense problem of population outburst. People are experiencing the crisis
such as climate change, shortage of food and also severe energy crisis that are all
related to the ever-increasing population. Our civilization is being squeezed
between rising population densities. It can be said that if such trends continue,
there will be a severe shortage of food supply. The government should impose a
population control system upon every person living in the country by limiting
them to have one child. The eruption of population has affected the standard of
living of the people. The time has come when future citizens while in educational
institutions should understand various issues related to the population problem.
People live a world that has given us an ample of resources to sustain them and it
is up to human beings on how they use the same. As the number of people grows,
the amount of earth space is reduced. It should be remembered that people live in
a world that has three parts water and one part land and if that falls short than they
have no other option but to build man made islands to accommodate the ever
increasing rise of population. The need to address the family planning scenario
has become a very important concern and many countries have joined hand in
taking up the matter to educate the general public about the consequences of
having a large family. Younger generations today are more concerned about the
environment because the way people are continuing, they have no idea what the
world will be if the population keeps growing. Therefore, government should
impose the law that a family shall not have more than one or two kids so that they
can curb the population growth and also save the environment from the misuse of
the energy by millions of people. Resources are dying out because human needs
are increasing day-by-day. Sea levels are rising due to global warming. People
survive on food and water. If stern action is not taken from the government to
regulate population control then the country will become unrecognizable slums
filled with broken-down housing, bad transportation, and hungry and thirsty
people living on the filthy edge of human survival. Population contributes to a
vast number of problems however, many countries have adopted family planning
which is both successful and unsuccessful but they have managed to put the word
across to many about the issues and concerns that they should be aware of and that
prevention is better than cure.

PROBLEMS FACED BY INDIAN ECONOMY DUE TO OVERPOPULATION:

Adverse effects on savings

Unproductive investment
Slow growth of Per Capita Income
Under utilization of labor
Growing pressure on land
Adverse effect on quality of population and
Adverse social impact

STRATEGIES TO CONTROL POPULATION :

1. Using various means of communication to persuade people to adopt small family

norms.

2. Availability of family planning methods through different outlets in every region.

3. Setting up of family planning centers to make available the services relating to family
planning methods.

4. Financial assistance to the acceptors and motivators of the family planning methods.

5. Promoting female education and employment.

6. Promotion of delayed marriages.

TOOLS & TECHNIQUES USED TO CONTROL POPULATION:

Population control may use one or more of the following practices although there are
other methods as well:

 contraception
 abstinence
 medical abortion
 emigration
 decreasing immigration

The method(s) chosen can be strongly influenced by the religious and cultural beliefs of
community members. The failure of other methods of population control can lead to the
use of abortion or infanticide as solutions. While a specific population control practice
may be legal/mandated in one country, it may be illegal or restricted in another, indicative
of the controversy surrounding this topic.

In India, one of these methods can be applied keeping in mind the sensitivity of that area
to that method, & an action plan must be formulated depending on the region in which it
is being implemented.

SOLUTIONS & RECOMMENDATIONS:

1. Spreading of awareness by angadwadi’s & panchayats.

2. Strict abortion rules throughout the country.

3. Heavy promotion of contraception methods.

4. Divide Rural/Urban into zones & then spread awareness.

5. Formulate different strategies for urban & rural areas.

6. Rope in religious leader’s as their participation matters for influencing people.

7. Promoting spread of sexual education in school’s & colleges.

8. Promotion of street plays, TV ads, radio jingles to spread awareness.

9. Stop having biases between sexes.

10. Goverment counseling centers must be opened for better counseling of people
especially in rural areas.

11. The following law pertaining to population control must be made:

The law of 1 child per family should be strictly followed if the govt. is serious in its
efforts. There should be certain clauses in the law:
a) 2nd child should be penalized.
b) If the family goes for third child, they should be debarred for the voting rights, they
should be banned for govt. jobs, there ration cards should be cancelled.
c) Special benefits should be given to the poor families who are having one child.
d) If the family is having a girl, he should be given permanent govt. job or other financial
benefits.
The above law, if implemented will go a long way in curbing the threat of population
explosion. It has to be done very quickly because time is running out and we don’t have
any options at all.
