Mode Function

1) Access Unconditionally Sets a switch port to access mode,

regardless of other DTP Functions

2) Trunk Sets the switch port to unconditional trunking mode and

negotiates to become a trunk link, regardless of neighbor
interface mode

3) Dynamic Auto Sets the switch port to respond but not to activel send DTP
negotiation frames

4) Dynamic desirable Sets the switch port to actively send respond to DTP
negotiation frames default for Ethernet
5) Nonegotiate specifies that DTP negotiation packets are not sent on the
Layer 2 interface

Vlan Trunking Protocol (VTP)

1) Advertises VLAN Configuration information.

2) Maintains VLAN Configuration consistency throughout a common administrative
Domain
3) Sends advertisements on Trunk ports only

VTP MODES

Server
Client
Transparent

Server :- 1) Creates, Modifies, and Deletes VLANs

2) Sends and forwards advertisements
3) Synchronizes VLAN configurations
4) Saves Configuration in NVRAM

Client:- 1) Cannot Create, Change, or Delete VLANs

2) Forwards advertisements
3) Synchronizes VLAN configurations

Transparent :- 1) Creates, Modifies, and deletes VLANs locally only

2) Forwards advertisements
3) Does not synchronize VLAN configurations
4) Saves configuration in NVRAM

VTP Operation

1) VTP Servers and Clients are synchronized to the latest revision number
2) VTP advertisements are sent every 5 minutes or when there is a change.

VTP Configuration Guidelines

. Configure the following:

 1) VTP domain Name
2) VTP Mode (Server, Client, Transparent/ Server is default)
3) VTP Password

 Use caution when adding a new switch into an existing domain.

 Add a new switch in client mode to prevent the new switch from propagating
incorrect VLAN information
