M.J. Akbar is an Indian journalist, author and politician. He is the founder and former editor-in-chief of The Asian Age and the former Minister of State for External Affairs of India. Some of his notable works include Riot After Riot and India: The Siege Within. He launched the political magazine Covert in 2008 and the Sunday newspaper The Sunday Guardian in 2010.

• Akbar attended Calcutta Boys' School and
later Presidency College, Calcutta where he attained a BA in English.
• His grandfather, Prayaag, was a Hindu.
• He was adopted by a childless Muslim
couple and later converted to Islam to marry a Muslim girl. Personal life
Akbar is married to Mallika
Joseph, his contemporary at The Times of India.
They have two children,
Prayaag and Mukulika. Career • 1971 : Akbar joined The Times of India in 1971 as a trainee. Within a few months moved to the The Illustrated Weekly of India.
• 1973 : The Free Press Journal Group
in Mumbai.
• 1976 : Ananda Bazar Patrika Group.
• 1982: Conceived, designed and
edited the daily newspaper, THE TELEGRAPH, which had a major impact on newspaper journalism in India. Career 1989: Left journalism for a brief stint in politics.
1991 : Lok Sabha elections. Akbar
joined the Government as an advisor in the Ministry of Human Resources.
1992: Resigned from government,
and left politics in December 1992 and returned to journalism and full time writing.
1993 : M J Akbar started a new
media company. Career • 1994:THE ASIAN AGE newspaper appeared in February.
• 2004 : The group began
publishing THE INTERNATIONAL HEARLD TRIBUNE in India, and became a publishing partner of THE NEW YORK TIMES. • 2006 : Akbar Joined The Brookings Institution. • 2008 : Career 1.M J Akbar was removed from The Asian Age and Deccan Chronicle. 2.M J Akbar Launched a Fortnightly Political Magazine named 'Covert' on 13 May 2008 in Delhi.
• 2009 : Ram Jethmalani JOINS COVERT
MAGAZINE AS CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD IN NOVEMBER 2009
• 2010 : M J Akbar has launched a new
Sunday newspaper in Delhi titled "The Sunday Guardian" from 31 January 2010.
