• State the purpose of the lecture


• Give an overview -- how does this lecture fit
in with previous lectures
• Get their attention by pointing out a gap in
their knowledge or arousing their curiosity

• Ask a question
• State a series of rhetorical questions
• Reference a recent news story, film, …
• Pose a problem
• Tell a funny story or joke (with caution)
• Define a term critical to the lecture

• Assume an attention span of 10 - 15 minutes


• Plan periodic summaries, particularly of the
material is difficult
• Use clear, relevant examples
• Emphasize relationship between points
• Don’t try to cover too much
