1. Describe Cathy as a child. Provide two examples from the book to support this.

2. During this section we never have any concrete descriptions of how Heathcliff feels about young
Cathy. However Bronte clearly shows that Healthcliff is greatly affected by Cathy. Find a place
where the author shows that influence that Cathy had over the boy. Explain the quote.

3. Healthcliff tells Nelly on page 59 that he would “not exchange, for a thousand lives, my condition
here for Edgar Linton’s at Thrushcross Grange.” What does
he see in the window that makes him feel this way? Describe
what bothers him.

4. Do you believe that Cathy has really changed from her five weeks at Thrushcross Grange with the
Lintons? Why or why not?
5. How does Nelly describe Healthcliff’s eyes? What foreshadowing or metaphorical meaning might
exist in this description?

6. One theme of this book that that when we are exiled or isolated it has a great effect on us. How is
Heathcliff affected by being sent away from the family and treated as a servant?

7. Read carefully the “mood of mind” that Lockwood describes to Nelly on page 75. What sort of mood
is he describing using the example of watching a cat lick himself?

8. A backhanded compliment is a compliment that is also somewhat an insult (such as “you are smarter
than you look” or “you throw well for a girl.”) What backhanded compliment does Lockwood give
Nelly on page 76?
