TV presenter, model and actress Zara Martin, exudes that old
Hollywood glamour, which makes her impossible to ignore.
Her smouldering looks are a result of her British father and
Indian mother. This fledgling star first graced our screens as
a presenter for the news and pop culture station helmed by Al
Gore Current TV and has since spread her wings creatively by
working on a slew of fashion and television related projects.
Zara recently turned designer by collaborating with fashion
label BodyAmr. She worked with the brand on a 7 piece
capsule collection, which was shown as part of the BodyAmr
spring summer 2011 show, at London Fashion Week.
Glossy was honoured to shoot and interview the multi
talented beauty.

A fashion marketer by trade, I started my blog www.
lucylaucht.blogspot.com as an honest account of the
highs and lows of moving to New York City as I strive to
succeed in the industry that captivates me so.
Moving to New York City to pursue my dream
following a close family bereavement is one of the hardest,
and possibly selfish, decisions I’ve ever made. Leaving
behind family, friends and familiarity is a massive step.
Despite a mind full of what ifs, I’m finally here and I’m
{apprehensively} excited about it too.
The phrase “If you can make it here, you can make
it anywhere” was coined for good reason and four weeks
into an adventure of a lifetime, here’s the story so far…
WEEK 1 – AUGUST 23
I arrive early for the first day of my internship at
production agency Northsix where the office is spacious and
the shelves lined with files announcing exciting names like
Interview Magazine and Balenciaga. North Six’s role is to
act as a production facility, organizing photo shoots for high
end fashion photographers, which includes working at an
editorial level with some of the worlds biggest magazines, as
well as organizing shoots directly for high end fashion clients
themselves and their advertising agencies.
My first assignment is to run a wrap book to the Vogue
Offices. I practically sprint the fifteen blocks to 4 Times
Square, with visions of meeting Anna Wintour herself in
the corridor. Alas, the closest I get to that dream is the
messenger centre although I do spot Candy Pratts Price
walking through Times Square. >>

escapades with other women, (and men) to inspire them
to live for themselves and do what feels good. It is about
taking actions that reflect one’s wants and needs. People
tend to get caught up in what is expected of them and
focus on fitting a certain mold; the most important thing
you can do for yourself and those around you is be true to
yourself. I also wanted to open women up to the idea of
not being shy or afraid to express them selves sexually.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST REALISE YOU
HAD A TALENT FOR DRAWING?
My first memories of drawing were with
my brother in our living room when I was
seven years old. My mother didn’t allow
us to eat sugar, so we would create art
after school to sell to neighbors on the
weekend. With the money we made, we
would buy candy and sweets from the
Hostess store down the street. I guess, at
that moment, I realized people would buy
my drawings.

ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING A FULL

TIME ILLUSTRATOR?
Yes. I work on editorial and commercial
assignments as well as my own projects.

COULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS

WHILE WORKING ON AN ILLUSTRATION?
Once I establish the direction and concept with
the editors or clients I go through my tear sheets,
digital image archive, my travel photos, etc., with
the story in mind. I flood my head with imagery and
then something clicks. I then usually do rough pencil
sketches focusing on general layout, basic look and
feel and general color scheme.

WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR

INSPIRATION?
Kind of anywhere and anything. I have
an image archive of many different
vintage illustrations, photos of people
and places. I also find inspiration by
way of magazines, blogs, traveling,
fairytales, fashion, Art Nouveau, Italian
Renaissance art, architecture, and
even taking walks with my dog around
downtown.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING

AWAY FROM ILLUSTRATION?
I love spending time with my husband,
family and friends. I walk all over
Downtown Los Angeles with my
dog. I love going to familiar and new
restaurants all over LA… especially
Mexican restaurants! I also love
farmer’s markets, museums, and the
main library in Downtown, LA. I enjoy
traveling and spending time in other
countries and cities and immersing
myself in their cultures. And recently, I
have been baking pies a lot. >>
Despite having never taken a
photography class, or even glanced at
a text book on the basics of the subject,
17-year old Welsh photographer, Grant
Thomas, has emerged as a start on
the rise within one year of moving to
London. We caught up with the talented
teen to chat about his influences and
find out what makes him tick.
WHAT SPARKED YOUR INTEREST IN
PHOTOGRAPHY AND WHEN DID
YOU START SHOOTING?
I started shooting when I was 16 in
Wales, I’ve just always been quite
interested in photography and fashion
and it all kind of merged together. But
there wasn’t really anywhere to shoot
in Wales because where I lived was
so isolated so I just took photos of
anything really, like, landscapes (and)
portrait stuff. Then I started shooting
(…) low-end fashion with (…) amateur
models and amateur team members in
Wales – mostly in Cardiff… then I kind
of went up from there and moved to
London quite quickly.
WAS THERE SOMETHING
IN PARTICULAR, SUCH AS A
PHOTOGRAPHER WHOSE WORK
YOU SAW, THAT MADE YOU WANT
TO BE A PHOTOGRAPHER?
I did a lot of research online but it just
kind of came naturally.

No, never. Completely self-taught.

I’d like to shoot film I just haven’t because it’s
not so convenient right now as I’m so busy I
can’t really swap between them.

The precise lines of John Paul Thurlow’s work are instantly
recognisable. The illustrator and artist is known for his
striking cover illustrations. His body of work includes
a 100 strong collection of illustrations of his favourite
magazine and record covers executed in his precise
and astoundingly realistic style. The fact that John Paul
Thurlow is able to recreate digitally mastered images
via tHe medium of illustration is an incredible feat.
With each he leaves his indelible mark by adding extra
scribbles, thoughts and feelings. His work is also notable
for showing the arduous process that goes into his work.
His sheer technical skill is awe inspiring and it is no
wonder that his counts the likes of the Gucci Group, ELLE
etc s clients. We were honoured to interview the talented
illustrator on his Cover series project, his work to date
and much more.

Oooh that’s a deceptively tough question to answer but
to be honest I value anonymity. Everything you need to
know about me is in my
art and the Covers book. WHAT WAS INSPIRED YOUR COVER
ILLUSTRATION PROJECT?
The idea for Covers has come to me more
than once. First at college where I made a
piece of art, which recreated the cover of
the first 7” single I ever bought: Yes Sir I can
Boogie by Baccara. And once again when
I went on a retreat to Japan to escape
London and all it’s shit. I was automatically
drawing the contents of my room in order
to forget stuff and there it was: a travel
size British Elle on the low table. I just kept
on drawing it… although I must admit I
changed the title to fit my mood. >>

The infamous pouty lipped dolls 'With
A Passion 4 Fashion' have been around since
2001 and have had such major success, it's
actually quite unbelievable! These fashion dolls
pushed boundaries within the doll industry and
even influenced fashion designers and real life
fashion trends! I have watched them grow into
the phenomenon they are and even saw them
overtake Barbie as the #1 selling fashion doll at
the peak of the Bratz brands success. The dolls
stand for fashion (of course) friendship and
diversity which is very inspiring in itself! They
even had an episode of Project Runway Canada
all about them.....just goes to show how
influential these fashion dolls are in the fashion
industry!! Sassy, fashion forward and totally
inspiring.....the Bratz are a big inspiration in
my work and very fun to sketch and design for!
Who knows..... maybe I'll end up designing a
collection for the Bratz one day!

JESSICA RABBIT.
Jessica Rabbit, the iconic animated
character from the movie 'Who Framed
Roger Rabbit' has had a major influence on
my illustrations since the day I watched the
movie for the first time. I was completely
besotted when I was younger and I still am
as a teenager. I would watch the movie, pause
the video and sketch Jessica Rabbit over and
over again until I perfected it! Jessica Rabbit is
glamorous, sexy, and impossibly perfect....well
she is animated! Still, this hasn't stopped her
becoming an icon for loads of women....some
go as far as having cosmetic surgery to try and
look like Jessica! That signature side swept
hair covering one eye, her sparkling red gown
that hugs her curves in all the right places
and shows off her clevage. Not forgetting her
super high red stiletto heels!! Drawing Jessica
has helped me perfect drawing a female form
which is why she is a big inspiration. Looking
at some of my fashion illustrations, I can see
where I may have subconsciously added some
Jessica Rabbit flair.....she is embedded in my
brain still after all these years haha!

I feel like I have grown up with these two gorgeous
young ladies to an extent and have watched them
grow from being actresses and tween icons into savvy
businesswoman with huge fashion empires! Mary-Kate
and Ashley, in my opinion are poster girls for how child
stars can go down the RIGHT path and have major
success! These fraternal twins have been working in the
entertainment industry since they were 9 months old and
continue to work hard and it seems to have certainly paid
off for them. Filthy rich before they could even crawl and
they totally started the tween phenomenon followed by
other young teen stars who wanted to achieve the same
huge success. Now at 22, they have swiftly moved on from
their tween days and are now forces to be reckoned with twins have achieved, and I see really humble, sweet and
