Motherboard

The motherboard, a single circuit board, provides the
path through which the processor communicates with
memory components and peripheral devices.

Microprocessor

Sometimes called the central processing unit (CPU),

it has two fundamental sections: the control unit
and the arithmetic and logic unit.

The Control Unit

The control unit is the command center of the processor. It has

three primary functions:
1. To read and interpret program instructions
2. To direct the operation of internal processor components
3. To control the flow of programs and data in and out of RAM

The Arithmetic and Logic Unit

The arithmetic and logic unit (ALU) performs all

computations (addition, subtraction, multiplication
and division) and all logic operations (comparison).

RAM stands for Random Access Memory.

It refers to memory that the microprocessor can read from

Monitor Types

1. CRT
The CRT (cathode ray tube) monitor is the traditional, glass-
screen, television-set-like monitor.
2. LCD
The LCD (liquid crystal display) monitor is the newer, flatter type
of computer screen.

Graphics Adapters
It’s the circuitry that runs the monitor and controls the image that the
monitor displays. You should look for three key things in a graphics
adapter:
1. The amount of memory
The more memory, the more colors and high resolutions
2. Whether it has a GPU (graphics processing unit)
3. The type of adapter
AGP or PCI
