The many applications for a book of Urdu idioms induced me to undertake this little work. It has been compiled from varions sources but chiefly from the Urdu dictionary Farhang-i A~afiyya. Idioms that are not fairly common have been omitted. My thanks are due to Shams'<I-Tllamii l\:Iuhamrnad Yiisuf Ja'fari, Khan Bahadur , Head Mawlavi of the Board of Examiners, for constant help during the preparation of the work for the press.

To facilitate reference a very full English index is appended.
