Antigone
Ode 2 and Scene 3
Ode 2
1. At the start of the ode, what does the Chorus compare “God’s Vengeance” (revenge) to?
2. What does the chorus mean when they say that “this gathering sorrow from time long past / Loom(s)
upon Oedipus’ children generation from generation” (lines 7 and 8.) What are they predicting will happen?
Scene 3
1. In lines 8-10, Haimon states that his marriage is secondary to his father’s “continuing wisdom.” What
does this mean to you?
3. What does Haimon beg of his father, in lines 73-77? What does this mean? (Note: this is Creon’s tragic
flaw!)
4. Creon says that Antigone must die and Haimon says, “then she must die.” But what threat does Haimon
make, in line 119? Creon takes this as a threat that Haimon will do what?
6. Haimon had originally said that he would put his father before his marriage. By the end of scene, he
seems to have changed his mind. What caused this change in your opinion?
8. Antigone is basically going to be buried alive. Why is this ironic? (Consider what this is punishment
for!)
9. Why does Creon not simply give in? Everybody is against him, after all. What do you think motivates
him to insist that he is right?
