Signals (MCS), Rawalpindi

The Military College of Signals, a co-educational and constituent Campus of National University of Sciences and
Technology, is dedicated to advancing knowledge and educating students in science and technology. The college has
come a long way in the history. The journey started in 1947 when it was established as the School of Signals at
Rawalpindi Cantonment. The basic aim was to enhance the professional competence of the officers of the Corps of
Signals by imparting high quality training in the field of Telecommunication. Transitions are critical moments in the life
spans of institutions. Such a transition took place in 1960 when a BE degree programme was initiated at the School
and later in 1977 the School became the College of Signals and was affiliated with UET Lahore for its degree programme.
In 1993 came another such a transition giving Military College of Signals another opportunity to re-energize as a great
institution that has lived through a rich history of challenges and accomplishments. The college became a constituent
College of NUST.
The spirit of the institution has not changed over these years. Here the fundamental purpose is to challenge students
to realize their highest potential. The college provides an environment where intellect and art, character and resilience
are nurtured and cherished. Our students become excellent writers and communicators. They are able to reason
critically in the world of Engineering, Mathematics, Business and Science with the ability to reach out to all types of
learners. We aim to produce graduates who respond with understanding and compassion to
the complexity of the human conditions.
The Electrical Engineering Department, the Computer Science Department and the
Department of Information Security conduct BE, MS and PhD programmes. Over 1000
Telecommunication Engineers and about 300 Software Engineers have graduated

and private sector.

POSTGRADUATE PROSPECTUS 2007 National University of Sciences and Technology

CAE 63

CAE has five departments – Aerospace

Engineering, Avionics Engineering,
Industrial Engineering, Humanities &
Science, and Professional Continuing
Education. All the departments have
highly qualified faculty with rich
academic, research and field
experience. Most of them have
acquired higher education from reputed
institutions of USA, Europe, Australia
and China. The research undertaken
by the faculty and students comprises areas related to aerospace structures, computational fluid dynamics, communication,
control, digital signal processing, microwave engineering, project management and optimization.
The Humanities & Science Department welcomes the prospective Aeronautical Engineers in CAE. The department
not only consolidates the knowledge of basic sciences and humanities of the students in first two semesters, but also
provides a sound foundation for the subsequent semesters by imparting education in Algebra & Calculus, Differential
Equations, Advanced Engineering Mathematics, Probability & Statistics, Programming & Numerical methods, Engineering
Physics, Chemistry, oral and written communication in English, Islamic studies and Pakistan studies. They participate
in After Dinner Literary Activities (ADLA) to achieve finesse in their oral communication and to inculcate confidence
in order to face the audience and communicate their views convincingly. The Computing, Chemistry and Physics
laboratories are equipped with the latest apparatus to perform experiments to reinforce various scientific concepts
learnt in classrooms.

The department of Aerospace Engineering has a two-fold mission; namely to provide students with a solid foundation
in the discipline of Aerospace Engineering and to expand existing knowledge through leading edge research. Aerospace
Engineering is the field where state-of-the-art technologies are applied everyday. In this discipline of engineering,
physical sciences, mathematics, and computers are combined in the design of aerospace vehicles to achieve high
performance with limited size. This aspect of Aerospace Engineering makes the mission of the department highly
demanding. For achieving the first mission, the department has four academic sub-divisions. These sub-divisions
are Aerodynamics and Fluid Mechanics, Aerospace Structures and Material Sciences, Aerospace Propulsion, and
Mechanics. For achieving the second mission, the department has five main laboratories; Aerodynamics Lab, Structures

Lab, Propulsion Lab, Numerical

Analysis Lab, and Computer
Lab. Aerodynamics lab has one
sub-sonic wind tunnel which is
utilized for teaching and research
activities. Amongst much other
equipment, the Structure lab has
Tensile Testing Machines and
related state-of-the-art data
acquisition system. Numerical
Analysis Lab is equipped with twelve workstations and a 16 node Beowulf Computing Cluster. Presently this lab fulfills
all the number crunching needs of faculty and students. The principle strength of the department is the emphasis put
on students for understanding how to think, learn, and adapt.

A sizeable magnitude of the engineering aspect of a modern day aircraft is its electronics systems. CAE is one of the
few institutes in the world that has a dedicated Avionics Engineering Department. The Avionics Engineering Department
at CAE blends six curriculum-related groups namely; Circuits & Power Electronics, Digital & Embedded Systems,
Communications, Controls, Electromagnetics, Microwave & Antenna, and Radar & Avionics Systems. The department
has a wide variety of facilities for use in research and instruction. Over the years, 15 laboratories have been established
to support the curricula of these groups for BE (Avionics) and BE (Aerospace) degree programmes. Sophisticated
electronics, controls, DSP, embedded systems, machines, RF antenna & communication laboratories provide excellent
opportunity for the students to carryout course related experiments under the guidance of qualified instructors. These
laboratories are equipped with advanced equipment like radar and EW trainer, PCB prototyping machine, transmission
line trainer, communication trainer, optical and laser trainer, embedded system design tools, Agilent Advanced Design
System for microwave engineering, controls engineering equipment etc.

One feature that distinguishes the College of Aeronautical Engineering from other in-country educational institutions
is it’s pioneering role in establishing the first-ever department of the Industrial Engineering. Since it’s inception in
1965, the department has successfully provided the students a solid background in manufacturing fundamentals,
extensive training in process management and well developed personal skills. It has enabled the college graduates
to promote quality, efficiency and productivity by optimizing the resources while concurrently minimizing operational

for various agencies on a regular basis.

The Professional Continuing Education Department is the youngest department, established in 1990 to conduct cross
disciplinary training and impart professional knowledge on advances in technology to senior and junior engineering
officers. Senior Engineering Management (SEM), Engineering Field Supervisors (EFS), Primary Professional Training
(PPT) and Junior Commissioned Officers Maintenance Management Course (JMMC) are conducted for PAF and other
customers.

The college has an effective CAE Academic Network (CAN) that provides sharing of network
resources and connectivity to Internet and Pakistan Education Research Network (PERN).
A 2 MB fiber optic/DSL link provides Internet to CAE which is available to all CAE users
round-the-clock. Desktop access to worldwide databases is available through HEC’s Digital
Library. An Electronic Class Room (ECR) is being established to enable the reception and
transmission of lectures from/to other colleges and universities.

The college library has a collection of more than 87,400 volumes of technical and reference
books. In order to keep abreast with the latest technological developments, magazines, journals
and periodicals are subscribed on regular basis. The library has a computerized database that can also be accessed
