~ MARCH 1983CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING CAN BE DEADLY
Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, deadly poisonous gas, which, when breathed,
‘eprives the body of oxygen and causes suffocation. Exposure to air contaminated with
rbon monoxide produces symptoms of headache, dizziness, loss of muscular control,
Pparent drowsiness, coma. Permanent brain damage or death can result from severe
exposure,
It occurs in the exhaust fumes of fuel-burning heaters and internal-combustion engines
and becomes dangerously concentrated under conditions of inadequate ventilation. The
following precautions must be observed to ensure the safety of personnel whenever the
personnel heater, main, or auxiliary engine of any vehicle is operated for maintenance
purposes or tactical use.
|. DO NOT operate heater or engine of vehicl
ADEQUATELY VENTILATED.
in an enclosed area unless it is
2. DO NOT idle engine for long periods without maintaining ADEQUATE
VENTILATION in personnel compartments
3. DO NOT drive any vehicle with inspection plates, cover
lates, engine compartment
doors removed unless necessary for maintenance purpos
4, BE ALERT at all times during vehicle operation for exhaust odors and exposure
symptoms. If either are present, IMMEDIATELY VENTILATE personnel
compartments. If symptoms persist, remove affected personnel from vehicle and treat
as follows: Expose to fresh air; keep warm; DO NOT PERMIT PHYSICAL
EXERCISE: if necessary, administer artifici iration.
!HE BEST DEFENSE AGAINST CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING IS
ADEQUATE VENTILATION
Extreme care should be used when driving M1SI series vehicles. They have more
responsive stecring and acceleration than other vehicles. Watch speed, especially on
turns. A full right or left turn at speeds above 20 mph (32 km/h) can cause any vehicle to
g0 out of control and/or turn over
Do not use an open flame type light to check fuel tank or tank filler neck strainer.
Use extreme care in removing radiator filler cap when temperature gage reads above 180°F
=2°C),
