• What do you mean by a system?

3
WHAT IS SYSTEM
ENGINEERING
• System is collection of inter-related components.

• Engineering means designing of complex objectives.

• Therefore SYSTEM ENGINEERING is defined as

collection of inter-related components for designing of
complex objectives & then to achieve that objectives. It
denotes different things to different people.

4
EVOLUTOION

• The concept of System Engineering was introduced in

1940 at BELL’S Laboratory.

5
FEATURES
1. System engineering is helpful in designing,

implementing & maintaining socio-

technical
systems.

2. System engineering is concerned with the services

provided by the system.

3. System engineering process includes specification

integration & testing.

Systems Engineering
on the basis of techniques

Technical computer-based system engineering

– Engineering that include hardware and software but
where the operators and operational processes are
not normally considered to be part of the system.

Socio-technical system engineering

– Engineering that include technical systems but also
operational processes and people who use and
interact with the technical system. Socio-technical
systems are governed by organisational policies and
rules.
9
OBJECTIVES

• To explain what a socio-technical system is and the

distinction between this and a computer-based system.

• To introduce the concept of emergent system properties.

• To explain system engineering process.

• To explain system integration.

10
What The Emergent
properties are?
Emergent system properties are the properties of the
system that depend upon the system components & their
relationship.

It can be only accessed & measured once while

integrating the components in the system.

11
Give the examples of
EMERGENT PROPERTIES.

12
EXAMPLES OF
EMERGENT
PROPERTIES

SECURITY RELIABILITY PERFORMANCE

13
Types of
emergent properties
• Functional emergent properties
These appear when all the parts of a system
work together to achieve some objective.

• Non-functional emergent properties

These relate to the behaviour of the system in
its operational environment.

14
SYSTEM INTEGRATION

• The process of putting hardware, software

& people together is called system
integration.

15
System Engineering
process

• Process of system engineering completes in 3

steps.
• 1. specification
• 2. integration
• 3. testing

16
PROCESS

SPECIFICATION INTEGRATION TESTING

17
SPECIFICATION

It means setting up of the objectives.

18
TESTING

In this step, the actual results are matched with the

expected results. If both the results are matched then the
objectives are said to be achieved. If it does not match
then the deviations are to be found.

19
System Engineering Scope
• Mission Design and System Requirements trades

• System Design and Analysis

• System and Operations Development Technical

Management

20
Challenges

• Attracting and developing talented system engineers.

• Establishing Institutional system engineering

mechanisms.

• Managing the right balance of investments in

institutional and project developed systems
engineering capabilities.
