Background
Fats help us maintain a healthy body for example; skin, hair, body organs against
shock, body temperature, and healthy cell function. Too much fat isn’t healthy because it may
lead to obesity.
Purpose
We are doing this to gain knowledge of how much fat a butter-bagel contains and
if it is a part of a healthy diet or not.
Materials
· Acetone
· Beaker
· Stirrer
· 5 Grams of a butter-bagel
· Petri-dish
· Graduated Cylinder
Procedure
1. Weigh an empty beaker. After you find the mass, add 5 grams of your food to the
beaker.
2. Record your data with the food in the beaker.
3. Add 10 ML of acetone to the food in the beaker.
4. Stir good and let settle for one minute.
5. Pour ONLY acetone into the petri-dish making sure the food remains in the beaker.
6. Add another 10 ML of acetone to the food and repeat steps 4 and 5.
7. Place the petri-dish with acetone into a well ventilated area.
8. Allow acetone in the petri-dish to dry overnight so you can see the fat that was extracted.
9. Allow beaker with the food to dry overnight.
The Next Day
10. Weigh the beaker with the food and record your data.
11. Clean the beaker and food.
12. Calculate the weight difference (initial weight of beaker with food – weight of beaker after
extraction) and record.
13. Observe and record the appearance of fats.
