THE PRAYER BOOK OF 1549

Why was there a need for a new religious settlement in 1549?

What was the Act of Uniformity

Who wrote it? What language was it in? Was the book Protestant or Catholic? What
was the significance of the wording of the Mass?
Use the book and include the following information:
priests still wore traditional vestments and the altar was maintained in a railed off
area at the east end of the church.
On the question of the Eucharist the Prayer Book set out to confirm that the
communion service commemorated rather than reinacted Christ’s sacrifice. But the
wording was ambiguous allowing Gardiner to interpret the service in a Catholic
manner.
The new book embodied the idea of active participation in the service with it’s
emphasis on the Protestant idea of a PRIESTHOOD OF ALL BELIEVERS.

How did the priests react? What does this show about their beliefs?

What were the penalties for none compliance?

In 1549 priests were allowed to be married. Some 20% did so. Is this evidence that
they were sympathetic to Protestantism?
