ME 3333 THERMODYNAMICS
Exam #1 (CLOSED BOOK & NOTES)
October 11, Monday, Fall 2010
Name: ______________________ 100 points
Poly ID: ______________________ 2 hours

1. (a) Define property. What is the difference between intensive and extensive properties?
Explain with illustration.

(b) The water in a tank is pressurized by air, and the

pressure is measured by a multi-fluid manometer as shown
in Fig. 1. The tank is located in mountain at an altitude of
1350 m where the atmospheric pressure is 92 kPa.
Determine the gage pressure in the tank if h1= 0.2 m, h2 =
0.35 m, and h3 = 0.45 m. Assume the densities of water, oil,
and mercury to be 1000 kg/m3, 850 kg/m3, and 13.6 g/cc,
respectively.

2. (a) What is the mechanical energy? How does it differ from thermal energy? What are the
forms of mechanical energy of a fluid stream?

(b) Consider a stone having a mass of 10 kg and a bucket containing 100 kg of liquid water.
Initially the stone is 10.2 m above the water, and the stone and the water are at the same
temperature, state 1. The stone then falls into the water. Determine ΔU, ΔKE, ΔPE, Q, and W
for the following changes of state, assuming standard gravitational acceleration of 9.81 m/s2,
(i) the stone is about to enter the water, state 2, (ii) the stone has just come to rest in the
bucket, state 3.

3. (a) What is the difference between the critical point and triple point? Does quality have any
meaning at critical point?
2  40 kW
(b) An oil pump as shown in the Fig. 2 is drawing 40 kW of
electric power while pumping oil (density = 900 kg/m3) at
rate of 0.2 m3/s. The inlet and outlet diameters of the pipe PUMP
are 100 mm and 140 mm, respectively. If the pressure rise Motor
of oil in the pump is measured to be 400 kPa and the motor
Pump
efficiency is 90 percent, determine the mechanical efficiency inlet
of the pump.

4. (a) A piston cylinder device contains 8 m3 of saturated water vapor. The piston that is free to
move has a mass of 10 kg and a diameter of 20 cm. The local atmospheric pressure is 90
kPa. Determine the temperature and the mass of the vapor inside the cylinder.

(b) A rigid tank contains 12 kg of water at 82.5 oC. If 7 kg of the water is in the liquid form and
the rest is in the vapor form, determine (i) the pressure in the tank and (ii) the volume of the
tank.
