Introduction
to
MEDIA

Newspaper:
The emergence of the new media branch in the
17th century has to be seen in close connection with
the spread of the printing press from which the
publishing press derives it name.
A newspaper is a regularly scheduled publication
containing news, information, and advertising. By
2007 there were 6580 daily newspapers in the world
selling 395 million copies a day. The worldwide
recession of 2008, combined with the rapid growth
of web-based alternatives, caused a serious decline
in advertising and circulation, as many papers closed
or sharply retrenched operations.
A wide variety of material has been published in
newspapers, including editorial opinions, criticism,
persuasion and op-eds; entertainment features such
as crosswords, sudoku and horoscopes; weather
news and forecasts; advice, reviews of movies,
classified ads; display ads, editorial cartoons and
comic strips.

Television:
Television (TV) is a widely used
telecommunication medium for transmitting and
receiving moving images, either monochromatic
("black and white") or color, usually accompanied
by sound. "Television" may also refer specifically to
a television set, television programming or television
transmission. The word is derived from mixed Latin
and Greek roots, meaning "far sight": Greek tele ,
far, and Latin visio, sight (from video, vis to see, or
to view in the first person).
Commercially available since the late 1930s, the
television set has become common in homes,
businesses and institutions, particularly as a source
of entertainment and news. Since the 1970s the
availability of video cassettes, laserdiscs, DVDs and
now Blu-ray Discs, have resulted in the television
set frequently being used for viewing recorded as
well as broadcast material.

Radio:
Radio is the transmission of signals by modulation
of electromagnetic waves with frequencies below
those of visible light. Electromagnetic radiation
travels by means of oscillating electromagnetic
fields that pass through the air and the vacuum of
space. Information is carried by systematically
changing (modulating) some property of the radiated
waves, such as amplitude, frequency, phase, or pulse
width. When radio waves pass an electrical
conductor, the oscillating fields induce an alternating
current in the conductor. This can be detected and
transformed into sound or other signals that carry
information.
Radio systems used for communications will have
the following elements. With more than 100 years of
development, each process is implemented by a wide
range of methods, specialized for different
communications purposes.

Overview
Of
RADIO MIRCHI

Overview of Radio Mirchi

Radio Mirchi is a nationwide network of private
FM radio stations in India. It is owned by the
Entertainment Network India Ltd (ENIL), which is
one of the subsidiaries of The Times Group.
"Mirchi" is Hindi for chili. The tagline of Radio
Mirchi is "It's hot!"
The original avatar of Radio Mirchi was Times
FM. Radio Mirchi began operations in 1993 in
Indore. Until 1993, All India Radio or AIR, a
government undertaking, was the only radio
broadcaster in India. The government then took the
initiative to privatize the radio broadcasting sector. It
sold airtime blocks on its FM channels in Indore,
Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Vizag and Goa
to private operators, who developed their own
program content. The Times Group operated its
brand, Times FM, till June 1998.

In 2000, the government announced the auction of

108 FM frequencies across India. ENIL won the
largest number of frequencies, and thus started its
operations under the brand name Radio Mirchi.
In January 2006, Radio Mirchi bagged 25
frequencies in the second wave of licences that were
issued by the Government of India. This pushes the
Radio Mirchi presence in 32 centers. In the first
wave of launches, Indore was the first city in India
having grade of first private radio channel.Times
decided to start radio channel to address the mass
audience as advertisers can be attracted by showing
a low cost per thousand.

Of
Operation

Area of Operation:
Currently, Radio Mirchi has a presence in more
than 33 cities, including the 6 metros of India
and Radio Mirchi is the costliest station in India
as they charge more than double of the
competition. Radio Mirchi believes
premiumness can be achieved by charging more
from the clients.

Softwares
Used
at
Mirchi
Software Used :
RCS (Radio Computing Software) is used for
recording and telecasting the programs ON-AIR. It’s
a sound software which is more friendly to the user
than the other software. This software functions
with the help of two monitors, two mikes, headsets,
sound mixer and Teleso.
TELESO :
It’s a software which is used for attending calls and
dialing calls.
SOUND MIXER :
At the extreme right end and at the extreme left
are the PGM button’s (in red colour).
When the right end key is in OFF: The ON-AIR
programs cannot be heard inside the studio.
When the left end key is in OFF: the ON-AIR
programs can be heard outside the studio (to the
listeners).
The grey-lines on the sound mixer marks the level
of normal base. At the time of Jock talk it should
kept at normal base whereas to be kept at its
maximum during the listeners talk.

PROGRAM CODES :
8 seconds of difference from Radio Mirchi station to
the ON-AIR public.
STATION JINGLE- Song about the Mirchi station
which comes only during every hour’s beginning.
PROGRAM BUMPER- Liner about each program.
CREDIT LINE- Name of the program sponsors. (i.e)
lines like “brought you by”.
MIRCHI HATRICK- Promo for the Hatrick songs
played.
STATION PROMO- Ad about the Mirchi station.
LINER- Program promo (i.e) comic, message.
SPARKLER- Characters for program promo (i.e) like
Mokka Mohan.

RCS Software :

RCS (Radio Computing Software) used for

recording, ediing, to attend telecalls. It consists of
two moniters. In the left moniter the recording and
saving will take place. And in the right the program
going ON-AIR can be viewed. And the recorded
material can be included in the program which has
to be telecasted.
Using this software I recorded the telecalls and
saved it with the help of the Quick-Set software.

Attending Calls :

With the help of the Mic and headset which is

connected to the RCS software and Teleso, I
recorded telecalls and edited them that were
telecasted ON-AIR.
I attended the calls and with the help of my co-
intern recorded the calls and adjusted the hot keys
to level the sound base to avoid the jarring sound
(disturbance).

Sound Mixer : (Digital Audio Console)

While attending the calls the right PGM buttons
must be kept ON inorder to hear the calls inside
the sudio and the left PGM button must be kept ON
to hear it inside the studio (optional).

“Teleso” hardware is used to dial and attend calls.

Using the numeric keys on the left side the
outgoing calls can be made. The lights on the first
3 keys on the top row will blink if there are any
incoming calls. To disconnect the call press “Drop”
key and “Next” key to attend the next incoming
calls. To keep all the lines busy press “busy all”
key.
Saving the calls made:
After saving the calls with the help of Quick-Set
software the calls should be saved in the
respective show folders which will be displayed on
the screen. The required calls should be dragged
and inserted in the sound player to be telecasted
ON-AIR.

The program schedule to be telecasted ON-AIR can

be changed or edited using the “log editor” in the
“Selector” software.
