Bunkering is mainly Engineers job but as deck officer on duty we are obliged to help and maintain
safety before, during and after the operation. The following are some of OOW duties for bunkering;
Before
- PPE
- Means of communication is established between shipboard parties and shore personnel
- Notify all personnel onboard about the operation
- Scuppers and drains to be plugged
- Bunker barge to be moored
- Open shell door for hoses to be put through
- “B” flag hoisted or red flashing light to be displayed at night
- Rig fire wire
- Connected fire hose and fire extinguisher prepared and ready for use in case of fire
- Oil spill kit prepared and ready for use nearby (SOPEP)
- Familiarize with shipboard oil spill emergency response procedures
- Know weather and tidal information for that particular time
- Tighten mooring lines to avoid ship from moving
- Put up No Smoking placards at gangway and around bunker station
- Complete a prior Bunker checklist

Documentations
It is important that events and times during the operation are recorded in logbook for future
reference. Events include, Time bunker barge was moored, time hoses were connected, bunker
commencement time, stoppage times during operation, time bunker complete, time of hoses
disconnected, time bunker barge leaves, etc. Incase of emergencies, times and events will be very
important therefore must be recorded.
