JMET 2011 Analysis

JMET 2011 had 120 questions divided equally into four sections. Each question had four options
and carried 1 mark. Incorrect answers carried a penalty of 0.25 marks. The overall difficulty level
of the question paper was almost the same as that of JMET 2010 (with the difficulty level of two
sections going up and one section going down significantly).

Verbal Communication: The section was definitely tougher than that of JMET 2010. There
were at least 7 questions directly based on Vocabulary. The RC passages were also not easy. One
RC passage – Buchanan’s constitutional economics – was very difficult and involved subjectivity. A
score of 14-15 in the section would be considered good.

Logical Reasoning: This section was definitely the easiest in the paper. An attempt of at least
25-27 was possible without much effort. One major difference in the section as compared to
JMET 2010 was the absence of Verbal Reasoning questions (there were only 3 as compared to
15-20 last year).

Quantitative Ability: The difficulty level of the section went up significantly from JMET 2010.
There were 8 questions on Higher Maths in the paper. However, around 17-18 questions in the
section were still doable. The ability to select questions was of critical importance.

Data Interpretation: The difficulty level of the section was almost the same as that of last
year’s exam. There were two question sets which were difficult to interpret and calculate. A total
of 25-26 questions could have been attempted easily without any errors.

The overall cut-off for getting a call from SJMSom-IIT Bombay should be around 80 marks. The
cut-off for DMS-IIT Delhi should be around 77-78 marks. The sectional cut-offs in JMET are
generally not very high and anybody scoring 6-7 marks in each of the sections should clear the
sectional cut-offs easily for all the IITs.

The results of JMET 2011 will be announced on Monday, 3rd January 2011.
