MPEG2 – TS MONITOR

Signal quality issues are very common in today’s network infrastructures, which leads to complaints from TV
subscribers. IPTV operators are facing this tough challenge more often compared to the others, due to the nature of
its IP infrastructure and network devices in general. One congested buffer in a backbone component will influence the
quality of the whole service consumed by all subscribers. One lost IP packet translates immediately to visible picture
artefacts or an audible audio glitch (or both), perceived by all subscribers. nangu.TV team is aware of this serious issue
and is ready to help to the IPTV operators in difficult task of early problems detection and isolation.

nangu.TV MPEG2-TS monitor is product based on concept of distributed PC probes, connected in different strategic
points of IP network. These places usually are:
# headend switch
# interconnect points with other operators to monitor quality of service
# different geographic areas
# distribution switch close to the client (addressed by mobile probe)

Monitoring product has been developed as a realtime analyzer of MPEG2-TS envelope for the high number of channels
processed simultaneously on regular PC hardware. From envelope analysis, we can derive following information:
# packet loss based on continuity counter monitoring
# correctness of the whole MPEG2-TS envelope to identify multiplexer issues
# presence of specified elementary streams for specific channels
# monitoring minimal bitrate threshold (per elementary stream) to detect signal loss or missing live picture

Probe itself is processing multicast data and logs the issues found inside the streams. Logged events are then
propagated through a syslog service to the nangu.TV middleware or to the other 3rd party syslog servers. Other
notification interfaces (like SNMP) are also available.

In principle, we provide two different kinds of probes. Static rack mounted probe and mobile version.

From the performance perspective, one static probe can process up to 400Mbit/s aggregated stream bandwidth
thanks to highly effective demultiplexer code written in pure C/C++ language.
