About the Book

"A Dweller on Two planets is one of the most important texts of the 19th Century Atlantis canon. The boo was 'channeled' by Frederick S. Oliver. Oliver was born in Washington D.C. in 1866 and came to Yreka, California, with his parents when he was tw years old. Yreka is just north of Mount Shasta, a huge dormant volcanic eak in Northern California. Oliver started to write this book at the age of ighteen, in 1883-4, while surveying the boundaries of his family's mining laim. He found himself writing uncontrollably in his notebook. He ran hom in terror, where he sat down and let his hand write. These automatic writ ng spells continued for several years; he would write a few pages at a time. He completed writing this book in 1886, and died at the age of 33 in 18 9. A Dweller on Two planets was finally published in 1905, by his mother Mary Elizabeth Manley-Oliver. There are two editions which are substantially the same, except for a different set of typographical errors and hyphens (although curiously the page numbering in both is identical). The first edi ion, published in 1905, was reprinted in 1974 by Rudolf Steiner Books; th second, published in 1920 by the Poseid Publishing Company, Los Angele , CA, was reprinted in 1964 by Health Research. The 1920 version was sed as the basis for this etext, as it was printed more legibly. A Dweller 0 Two planets would be a tour de force for a teenager from rural California in the post-Gold Rush period. Although as a literary work it is weak in many ays, the details of the narrative reveal a we II-read and high Iy intelligent, if inexpe rienced, a uthor. The plot and pacing is irregular; the character zations are poorly conceived, and there are far too many melodramatic turns and plot elements left dangling. However, since this is a novel f ideas, these shortcoming should not detract from the enjoyment of th book. The real brilliance of this book is as a work of speculative fiction, particularly in the depiction of the high technology of Atlantis, and the fterlife. The book goes into great detail a bout a ntigravity, mass tra nsit, the employme nt of 'da rk-side' energy (which today would be called 'z ro point energy'), and devices such as voice-operated typewriters. Th cigar-shaped, highly maneuverable Atlantean flying machines, or vailx, have an eerie resemblance to 20th

AMA UENSIS' PREFACE.

By permission of the uthor, whose letter addressed to me, follows as his preface herein and to meet the natural inquiry and satisfy, so fa r as any persona I state me nt from me wi II, a ny honest inq u iring mind, I humbly appear in rder briefly to give the major facts concerning the writing ofthis--even to e--very remarkable book.

I am an only child of Dr. an Mrs. Oliver, who for many years have resided in the State of California.

I was born in Washington, . c., in 1866, and brought to the State by my parents two years later. Pr or to commencing the writing of this book, in 1884, my education had b en comparatively limited, and extended to a ve ry slight knowledge of th su bjects he rein treated.

My father, a well-known hysician, died a few years ago, my mother su rviving him. Both were d ily witnesses of most of the circu msta nces and facts surrounding the writi g of this book. But further than to state this, I do not think myself called pon to introduce my family into the work, nor, in fact, myse If, exce pt in so a r as it is meet fo r me to sta nd forth a nd do my personal part as the amanu nsis.

I fee I that I a m menta lIy and spiritua Ily but a figu re beside the Author of the great, dee p-sea rch ing, fa r-r ach ing and tra nscend ent questions prese nted in the following pages; and I read and study them with as much interest and profit, I imagine, as will any reader. At the same time I feel with no sense of the natural pride f an Author of such a book, that it is a work of unselfish love, and will he p to the betterment of an upward-struggling world, searching ever for m re light, and feed the hungry for knowledge of the great mystery of life a d of the eve r evolving sou I, th rough Him who said--"I AM TH E WAY; Fall W ME."

In these days of doubt, ma erialism, and even rank atheism, it requires all the courage I possess to assert, in clear unequivocal terms, that the following book, "A DWEll R ON TWO PlANETS," is absolute revelation; that I do not believe mysel its Author,--but that one of those mysterious

persons, if my readers choose to so consider im, an adept of the arcane and occult in the universe, better understood f om reading this book, is the Author. Such is the fact. The book was reveal d to me, a boy, and a boy, too, whose parents were mistakenly lenient t such a degree that he was allowed to do as he chose in most things. Not I cking in inclination to study, but very lacking in will-power, continuity an energy, I gained little in educational triumphs, and was pointedly c iticised by my teacher as "Iackada isica I, even lazy." He nce, when a little ast seve nteen yea rs of age, "Phylos, the Esoterist," took me actively inch rge, design ing to ma ke me his instrument to the world, that profound a ept showed what seems to me a rare faith, for I was without any solid education, as generally so considered, was minus any special religiou trend, and for my sole commendation, had willingness, love of the re arkable, and an uncolored mind.

For a yea r my occu It preceptor ed ucated me y mea ns of "menta I ta I ks," and to such a point was my mind occupied by he many new thoughts with which he inspired me, that I paid no heed t my environment, worked automatically, if at all, studied and read not, a d scarcely heard those who addressed my exterior senses. Then it was th t my father determined to stop my "approaching imbecility," as he c lied it; for I had avoided explanations, and had said nothing of the talk with my mystic preceptor, whom even I had never seen but a few ti es. To parental pressure I yielded, and told my--to me--divine secret. To y relief it was not scouted, but after a long narration to both parents, the expressed a desire to hear the mysterious stranger also. This he would no grant, but permitted me to quote his words, talks and addresses, and at I ngth I became so proficient that I could repeat what he said almost as fast s he spoke to me.

A circle was formed at home, consisting at first of my parents, W. S, Mallory (now of Cleveland, Ohio), and mysel , as hearers, and Phylos as teacher. Later Mrs. S. M. Pritcha rd and Mrs. J u ia P. Ch u rch ill were present. This was in Yreka, Siskiyou Co., Cal., early in he eighties, where the MS. was commenced in A. D. 1883-4, but was finis ed in Santa Barbara County, California, A. D. 1886, where it has ever since emained in the manuscript, at the comma nd of th e author.

It will have added interest to many who love, or have become interested in CALIFORNIA, to know that within full view 0 Shasta, one of her loftiest mountain peaks, this book was begun and almost finished under the
