RIVERS STATE POLYTECNIC BORI, SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING

DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING.

2ND SEMESTER EXAMINATION, 2009/2010 SESSION.

COURSE: STA 122 – INTRODUCTION TO STATISTICS

CLASS: ND1 MECHANICAL. TIME ALLOWED: 21/2 HRS.

COURSE LECTURER: MRS. GLORIA I. F. DAN-ORAWARI

INSTRUCTION: ANSWER 1 AND FOUR OTHERS QUESTIONS.

1. (i) State the use of statistics in Engineering. Given the data

below (a) Construct cumulative frequency curves on the same
graph using “more than’’ and “less than’’ methods and
determine the mean. (b) Calculate the geometric mean and
standard deviation.

2. Given the table below :

S 6 4 6 5 6
5 5 5 0 0
T 4 2 3 2 3
0 4 6 8 2
(a). Find a least square line fitting the data using S as the
independent variable. (b) If T is 30, what is the expected value of S?

3. A bag contains 10 black balls, 8 red balls and 12 green balls.

What is the probability that the 1st ball drawn is red, the second
ball drawn is green and the third ball red, where the balls are not
replaced after been drawn. (b) In a mass of production process,
where 0.2% of the articles are defective, they are packed in
boxes of 4,000. (i) What proportion of the boxes would expect to
be free from defective articles? (ii) What proportion would
contain less than 3 defectives?

4. Using the three points method for regression line, plot a scatter
diagram for the data below.

5. (a) In a statistics examination, the mean was 80 and standard

deviation was 10. Find the area under the curve that would be
between 62 and 93. (b) A stock rose in the first year by 10%,
15% in the second and fell 9% in the third year. What is the
average rise of the stock?
6. (a) Construct a histogram and indicate the mode. (b) Calculate
the harmonic mean; for the information given below.

millions of square miles. Construct (a) A bar chart (b) A pie chart.
