HOME-WORK—II

PART-A

1.When brakes are applied in a car, two brake shoes of inner radius a and outer radius b press against the side of the
wheel ,each being pressed by a force F, distributed uniformly over the shoe. Find the breaking torque generated if
the coefficient of friction between the brake shoe and the side of the wheel is μ.

2. Calculate the rolling friction on a tyre assuming that while supporting a weight, it gets flattened on the lower side
and the entire support comes from the force arising due to the pressure in the tyre and no other deformation take
place. The tyre has radius R, width b, and is filled with air pressure P, Find (i) the length of the rectangular area that
is formed on the lower side of the tyre because of the flattening of the tyre due to the load (ii)the rolling friction due
to this deformation. Assume that the pressure inside the tyre does not change when it gets flattened.

3. Using transformation formulae, calculate the moment and products of area of a rectangle of length a and width b
when the x-axis coincide with one of its diagonals and the origin is at the centre of the rectangle.

PART-B

4. For a rectangular plate immersed in water, so that its upper edge is at a depth of h1and the lower edge at h2. Find
the total force due to water pressure acts at the depth.

5. (i) Calculate the moments and product of area for an ellipse of semi major axis a and semi minor axis b. The
major axis of the ellipse is along the x-axis and the origin is at the centre of the ellipse. (ii) What are the values of its
radii of gyration about x- &Y-Axes?(iii) A different set of axes with the origin at the centre of ellipse is at an angle
of π/3.What are the moments and product of inertia about this new set of axes?

6. When light falls on a surface we can alternatively picture it as photons striking the surface. Each photon carries a
momentum hω/2πc,where h is the Planck’s constant , ω is the angular frequency of light. If a parallel light beam has
N photon per unit volume, calculate the pressure it exerts on the surface that it is falling on perpendicularly if (a) it is
completely absorbed , and (b) it is perfectly reflected by the surface
