Alloys
Technical Data Sheet AlMg5
ΠTypical Applications
Due to the excellent corrosion resistance the alloy is widely used in the chemical and food industry as well as
for furnishing and marine applications. The melting and solidification characteristics demand a thorough
process control.

• Mechanical Properties
The achievable mechanical properties are strongly dependent on the casting method applied. The table
refers to typical properties obtained in sand casting (S) and gravity die casting (G). Values in brackets
indicate the minimum values according to EN 1706.
Casting Temper Yield strength Tensile strength Elongation Hardness Fatigue strength

S F 90-120 (90) 160-230 (160) 3-12 (3) 55-70 (55) 60-80
G F 100-140 (100) 180-250 (180) 4-18 (4) 60-75 (60) 60-80
‘ Other Properties
Ÿ Castability Fair for sand and gravity die casting, limited for high pressure die casting
Ÿ Shrinkage Sand casting: 1.0–1.4%; gravity die casting: 0.9–1.2%
Ÿ Machinability Excellent
Ÿ Weldability Fair
Ÿ Corrosion resistance Excellent, even sea water resistant
Ÿ Surface treatment Anodizing and polishing for decorative purposes
’ Melt Treatment
Ÿ Mg-loss and hydrogen pick-up during melting can be reduced by small additions of Be
Ÿ Thorough degassing is necessary
Ÿ Grain refinement with Ti-B is recommended
Ÿ Casting temperature: 690 to 740°C
“ Heat Treatment
With the low Si content, the alloy is not heat treated.
